  • Today's entry comes from Baeble correspondent Bryan Sargent, who caught a recent performance by Jewish jam-heads Rashanim at Zebulon. Both Rashanim and Zebulon are highly recommended, one being an improvisational rock band with Middle Eastern influences ("Like you've invited Dick Dale to do the music at your bar mitzvah," says NPR), and the other a cozy Williamsburg cafe owned by a circle of musicians.

    Rashanim: Live at Zebulon, 11/30/06

Celebrating the release of their new CD Shalosh on John Zorn's Tzadik label, New York City trio Rashanim treated the capacity crowd at Brooklyn's Zebulon to a blistering set of the band's blend of rock, jazz, klezmer, surf, and middle-eastern-influenced compositions. Lead by guitarist Jon Madof, Rashanim proved why they've proclaimed themselves "NYC's baddest Jewish power trio." The rhythmic section of Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz on bass guitar and Mathias Kunzli on drums gave the songs extra color, adding to the wide palette already painted by Madof's virtuosic playing. Rashanim's pure joy and energy make them an utter pleasure to see and hear live. - Bryan Sargent
