5 Music Gifts to Buy Your Boyfriend

I won't kid you, ladies, guys are pretty difficult to buy gifts for. We're picky, arrogant, and honestly annoyed by any decision not made by us, so yeah, gifts can be a struggle. The best thing you can do is be assertive, trust your instincts, and ignore his insecurities. Because if he knows the words to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," he may not admit it, but he'd probably enjoy owning Red (maybe a bad example - I don't think anyone actually enjoys owning Red, but you get the point). And no one but the girlfriend is going to buy it for him. Here are a couple things your BF may enjoy but would never buy for himself, along with a few other great music gifts, arranged by price.

    1. The Weeknd - Trilogy
    $13 - Amazon

Here's an artist whose demographic seems to trend towards those with two X chromosomes. But listen closely - the things Abel Tesfaye is singing about are wholly unfeminine. Songs about partying, sex, and utter excess all under the guise of modern R&B is unique and exciting to listen to. And he'll get all of that in Trilogy, a nice distillation of The Weeknd's three critically acclaimed 2011 mixtapes.

    2. Rihanna - Unapologetic
    $16 - Amazon

Ri Ri has had a run of great singles in her career, but never an album that works on a track-by-track basis...until now. Unapologetic, while unfortunately condoning Chris Brown, is consistent, fun, and relentlessly danceable. And totally worthy of a guy's collection. Just don't blame us if he frames the cover and hangs it over his bed.

    3. Nicolas Jaar's The Prism
    $40 - Clown and Sunset

Is your boyfriend into hip (read: weird) things? Perfect! You can buy him The Prism, made by Nicolas Jaar. Put simply, it's a cube that plays music. The music is a 12-track "album" called Doon't Break My Love" featuring several Nicolas Jaar collaborations and other contributions. The Prism has a USB input, so I believe the idea is that you'll be able to add different song collections as they are released by CSA, so that your $40 box isn't a one-off. If nothing else, it'll be the most interesting gift your boyfriend gets.

    4. The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde: The Singles Collection
    $78 - InSound

If your boo loves hip-hop and owns a turntable, buy him this and your work is done. This collection includes seven 7" singles, a double CD, a puzzle (!), thorough liner notes, and unreleased tracks, among a few other fun tidbits. The box even says "Oh, shit!" when you open it.

    5. The Velvet Underground & Nico 45th Anniversary Box Set
    $86 - Amazon

The Velvet Underground and Nico are arguably the creators of indie rock, if not punk rock, and this box set is for the aficionado. You get The Velvet Underground & Nico in a multitude of forms - a stereo remaster, alternate versions and mixes, a disc of practice sessions, and a live recording. In addition, you'll also get a remastered recording of Nico's Chelsea Girl, which features The Velvet Underground. It's a little over-the-top, but a lot of people like exaggerations, and you can put it on and reminisce about the good 'ole days when musicians sang about real things, like buying heroin.
