A lot has (rightfully) been said about the political subtext of Kendrick Lamar's magnum opus record, To Pimp A Butterfly, and that political element is one of many reasons why we named it our record of the year. But not enough words have been written about how painfully, intimately personal the record is in its exploration of Kendrick's inner demons...specifically his battles with depression and substance abuse. And in the short film, "God Is Gangsta" (which is essentially two music videos for "u" and "For Sale"), that element of the record finally gets a visual form.
