Iggy Azalea

As sick of hearing "Fancy" as you undoubtedly are, what would 2014 even have been if not for Igloo Australia herself, Iggy Azalea. From rapping, to cyber-fighting, to shaking her tremendous booty, the I-G-G-Y skyrocketed to stardom in a big way.

Run The Jewels

Run The Jewels dropped their sophomore album, Run The Jewels 2 this year and ignited a widespread fever of hard hip hop. The duo is, in equal parts, half hilarious, half hard as f*ck, and all humanitarian. In addition to their smart ass online store, where you can buy premium priced RTJ2 packages that include Killer Mike and El-P housesitting, revenge shaming, or pretending to be your boys, the rappers have been eloquently out spoken on the issue of police brutality. When a fan successfully crowd funded the Meow The Jewels package (RTJ2 re-recorded entirely with cat noises) Run The Jewels stepped up, started work on the project, and pledged the funds raised to the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

Sam Smith

Sam Smith may have had the best year of all in 2014. Not only did his debut album In The Lonely Hour become the on of the highest-selling albums of the year (second only to1989, obvi), but songs like"Stay With Me" made him a household name and earned him a whopping five Grammy nominations.

Charli XCX

Charli XCX and Iggy Azalea burst onto the mainstream scene with "Fancy," but Charli, who wrote the song, has been a major mover behind the industry scenes for a few years now. She's responsible for, and featured on, the Icona Pop smash hit "I Love It." Since gaining breakthrough attention, the punky songstress has graduated to full blown pop diva. Joining the ranks of the scantily clad, lyrically vapid, bubblegum brigade that has re-emerged in 2014.

Ariana Grande

Speaking of the scantily clad bubblegum brigade, Ariana Grande had a chart topping year. Her single "Problem" (also featuring Iggy Azalea) charted strong this year, pulling her out of the Disney kid circle, and into the hot lights of Hollywood hot girl. While I tend to air on the side of Bette Middler, it seems that kitten ears, and pristine pony tails are still selling singles. Thanks to The Weekend, she managed to drop one bearable beat, "Love Me Harder"

Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor is one piece of bubblegum with something to chew on, and I don't mean that beautiful bass. The Nantucket born pop singer/songwriter blew up out of obscurity when she released 2014's only song about booty that doesn't require hot oil and a sideways wink. Unfortunately, as it trend with princesses of Pop, Meghan Trainor has made it clear that feminism isn't on her agenda. If I had a nickel for every time I heard a pop star say that, I'd probably still have less nickels than my figurative male counter part.

FKA twigs

The fact that FKA twigs's relationship with Robert Pattinson was the most covered thing about the British singer this year should make us all question what we're doing with our lives. Twigs also released her debut album LP1 and mastered the art of the expertly executed, skin crawling music video. Twigs is a powerhouse of detail oriented talent, and LP1 is just the preview.

Bleachers/Jack Antonoff

Jack Antonoff scored his major success points in 2014 with his EDM inspired contribution to Taylor Swift's wildly successful first country-less record. But he also owes his notoriety to a project he began working on while on the road as the lead guitarist for Fun.. A little band called Bleachers" was a secret for almost a year before signing to RCA and releasing Strange Desire in July. "Rollercoaster", a single off the album, is almost as great as Anotonoff's story behind the music video.

Hozier

The most streamed artist on Spotify in 2014. With the whole U2 fiasco, Ireland really needed a saving grace this year, and it came in the adorable shape of Andrew Hozier-Byrne, who exploded into the world of music with Grammy nominated single "Take Me to Church," whose video highlighst another vicious inequality. Set in today's Russia, two men are violently punished for their homosexuality. Hozier's EP of the same name was released in 2013, but it gained it's traction at the beginning of this year. He quickly followed it up with another EP (From Eden) and a killer self-titled debut album. Check out our take on the awesome music video for "From Eden".

Betty Who

The Australian pop star burst into the spotlight after her infectious song "Somebody Loves You" was used in a touching, and choreographed, marriage proposal . Spoiler alert: he says yes. Betty's song went viral with the video, and the rest is history. She's currently supporting Katy Perry on her "Prismatic" tour.
