has become the most successful podcast of all time. For those of you who have been on a desert island since October: SERIAL
is journalist Sarah Koenig's documentary podcast narrating her investigation into the 1999 murder of 18 year old Hae-Min Lee, for which her 18 year old ex-boyfriend Adnan Masud Syed was quickly convicted. Obviously, the validity of Syed's conviction is unclear, and not clearly unjust, but truly unclear.
The podcast's final episode was released this morning, and with it Mark Phillips—who also composes indie music under the moniker Sono Oto—has officially released his original score. Phillips was sent each episode a day and a half before it aired, and composed and remastered the music within the confines of 36 hours. "Sometimes I only had 20 minutes to get a piece sounding good, but in a way it was liberating. You can't really get caught up in the small stuff like how the bass sounds. I was forced to focus on the bigger picture: how can the music help the story?" Phillip's sonic narrative sharpens the already penetrating ambivalent nature of Koenig's investigation.
