Wale struck gold with
The Mixtape About Nothing, hailed by critics as one of the best hip-hop efforts of last summer, despite it not actually being labeled an album (and it was free). Now the hype is inflated for the go-go rapper's first LP,
Attention Deficit, which promises to continue his toungue-in-cheek humor over glitzy beats.
"90210" is a mockumentary of sorts, chronicling a stereotypical fame-chasing young woman living in LA. "Tongue in cheek" definitely resonates here, especially when discussing her vomiting up food and excessive cocaine use (topical!) while "doing anything for fame." The way Wale spits "Miss Rodeo Drive," the humor, the whole package...the track reeks of
College Dropout, and that is very exciting. In today's auto-tuned, blandly seasoned hip-hop climate, if the best we have to dine on is a shoddily put together reminder that Jay-Z is better off on the other side of the desk, we're going to throw up whatever we eat. Let's hope that Wale can be the appetizer to a return-to-form from promising new hip-hoppers. Judge for yourself.
