Noah and the Whale finished up their three-night engagement at the Mercury Lounge this past Wednesday to a sold out house. Their New York shows marked the end of the US leg of their tour in support of their most recent album that dropped last summer, The First Days of Spring. Now the band is off to tour with Phoenix all over Europe; what a rough life these guys lead. Noah and the Whale actually went through a roster change this summer when drummer Doug Fink decided to leave the band to pursue a career in medicine, oddly enough. The band picked up Jack on drums and added Fred on keyboard to give their live performances more texture. The guys played a really solid set, performing mostly songs from the new album, which set a rather somber tone for most of the evening picking up every now and then with songs like "Love of an Orchestra" and "Shape of my Heart", and Tom Hobden was a complete star on the fiddle. Front man Charlie Fink sang his heart out; it was pretty clear the material, mostly penned by him about his break up with ex band mate/ all around superstar Laura Marling, is still pretty emotional for him to perform. All in all it was a lovely night of folk drenched ballads, pensive love songs, and a full house of some very satisfied fans.- amelia trask
