1. "No Money" - Kings Of Leon - Come Around Sundown
This is a fun song. Come Around Sundown
isn't a picnic but it's a great after-school snack, and you shouldn't skip it just because it's loaded with sugar. You're an adult. Your music doesn't all have to be weird.
2. "Peppermint" - Spectrals - Extended Play EP
This music is the kind of effortless cool meets rock-a-billy that I can always get behind, and I'd imagine everyone else can too. Spectrals is slowly making the jump stateside, and it's worth it to get aquainted before everyone releases how neat it is. Early adopters.
3. "Bright Lights Bigger City" - Cee Lo - The Lady Killer
Yup. The Lady Killer
had the single of the summer even though it hit in August, and from the sound of it, the full album is going to be chock full of awesome stuffing.
4. "Tired Of Sex" - Weezer - Pinkerton
is full of Cuomo's boiled-down lyrics, not to mention his creepy asian fetish, but goddamn if it isn't an instant classic all around. The deluxe reissue is worth it for fans, go get it.
5. "You And Me" - Elizabeth and the Catapult - The Other Side Of Zero
It's amazing that some people can write songs that are so, so, so, so good they transcend trends and genres. "You And Me" can put a smile on anyone's face. Also check out the live version from the video we debuted yesterday
. The Other Side Of Zero
is out now.
6. "Under The Gun" - Apex Manor - The Year Of Magical Drinking
This is a new Merge Records act I'm digging. Ross Flournoy formed Apex Manor last year after his old band The Broken West got a little more literal. After an NPR
Monitor Mix songwriting contest got him penning again, Flurnoy wrote all of The Year of Magical Drinking
, due out in early January of 2011. For now, enjoy the song that launched a bunch of other songs.
7. "ACheerlaeder" - Bikini - RIPJDS
Bikini is a collaborative effort with a linear path of creation. Tracks start with poet Olivier Bonnard, who records a bunch of melodies and vocal lines and sends them to Nigel Diamond, who chops it up, records other stuff, and sends it all off to be mastered. Kind of an interesting setup but the product is neat, and you always have to keep it interesting in today's redundant world. The album hits shelves next Tuesday.
8. "Radioactive (Kings Of Leon Cover)" - Cee Lo - Unreleased
Yeah this is one of the mixtape artist's covering another one of the mixtape artists. Guilty. Cee Lo's acoustic, soulful treatment of KoL's first single is so tasteful and understated, it really demonstrates the potential of a song like "Radioactive". Good sh*t.
9. "Undertow" - Warpaint - The Fool
All the perks of what made the XX recordings so good, without the lame-o attitude, and a real sense of passion and energy! The Fool
is actually quite smart with its unconvential harmonies and bass heavy riffs. It's a meloncholy groove, but it gets those heads bobbing.
10. "All Of The Lights" - Kanye West - My Beatiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Featuring John Legend, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, Elly Jackson, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Rihanna (breath) and Elton John. Need I say more?
