THROWBACK THURSDAY: Jim James Live At The Hype Hotel

This Thursday, in honor of Jim James' recently released album Eternally Even, we're throwing back to when we caught the My Morning Jacket frontman for his performance at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel in 2013. Back then, he had just recently proved himself as a capable solo artist with his release of his debut solo album Regions Of Light And Sound Of God earlier that year.

In this performance of his song "All Is Forgiven," James proved that he could be as compelling an artist and performer on his own, as with his band. That's not to say that he hasn't grown immensely as an artist since then. With his first solo album, James gave us the same kind of psychedelic, impenetrable music and lyrics that we got in his projects with My Morning Jacket. With this newest LP, he has branched out from that, and embraced the personal exploration possible in solo music. On Eternally Even, James went much more personal, embracing themes related to himself and his personal and political beliefs. One can see the genesis of this shift in this song, "All Is Forgiven," where James takes aim at greater themes like religion and forgiveness, but grounds it in a first person perspective singing, "I pray that all is forgiven."
