It's been said that for a tenth anniversary, a gift made of diamonds is appropriate. While the good folks over at Lex Records can't be mailing us all envelopes stuffed with jewels, they were able to get some high-carat names to work together as part of their upcoming compilation, Complex. Those names happen to include Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and DOOM, whose track, "Retarded Fren," is available for streaming below as part of the label's anniversary celebration.
The Yorke and Greenwood produced track features layered drums, some bass heavy and some tinny, with DOOM delivering politically influenced verses. It sounds like DOOM has been following the Occupy movement. You may be expecting Thom Yorke to come in with the hook, but (SPOILER ALERT) it never happens. Instead, he and Greenwood stick to fiddling knobs, giving the track the little nuances and light touches that are staples of their own electronic sound. Maybe they'll give up that whole Radiohead thing and just become hip-hop producers. Who really cares about Radiohead anyway? Stream the horribly titled "Retarded Fren" right here.
Also, be sure to check out DOOM on tour, if you happen to live in Europe that is.:
