The 88 are not exactly new, having formed in 2002, had their music featured on numerous hit TV shows, and having released three official albums by 2008. However, a post-album parting of ways put the brakes on their career momentarily after their 2008 release through Island. They came back stronger than ever the following year, though, landing a tour both supporting and backing Ray Davies of the Kinks. Through this connection the band was able to record their latest, self-titled album in Davies' Konk Studios. The album hit iTunes September 14th of this year, and according to the band, "feels like a beginning." That's new enough to give us an excuse to write about a cool band like the 88, at least.

The 88 is supporting their album release with a tour (with only a few California dates left) and an appearance on Conan two nights ago, where they performed their latest single, "They Ought To See You Now." Their noted onstage energy really shines, and the song is an awesome, retro number with (unsurprisingly) lots of Kinks influence. Check it out below, courtesy of The Audio Perv. -peter menniti
