Folk singer/songwriter Damien Jurado is back with the first single from his upcoming album, Maraqopa. The track, "Nothing Is The News," is a moody folk song heavy on blues influenced guitar that eventually goes into a shredding contest with itself.
It begins off with just Jurado's voice and a softly strummed acoustic guitar before the rest of the instruments jump in, with several distorted guitars laying down riffs on top of each other. The layers of instrumentation are an easy trap that many musicians fall into, but Jurado handles them with ease, allowing the soloing guitars to play off of each rather than trying to overpower each other. Jurado's lyrics are sparse considering the song's length. Instead, he lets the listener focus on the melodies of his own "sha-na-na-na-nahs" in conjunction with the blistering six strings.
