In a recent episode of PBS's Blank on Blank Flaming Lips
frontman Wayne Coyne talks about his close brush with death in a Long John Silver's when he was only 17. The show, which sets previously unreleased interviews with artists to animation, included a 2002 interview between Jennifer Van Evra and Wayne Coyne.
The Flaming Lips were far from an overnight success, and Coyne recalls keeping his job at Long John Silver's from high school until his was 27. Early on in his fast food tenure, however, the singer was held at gunpoint in an armed robbery that he thought would be the end of his life. When the robbers left with only money, Coyne says he and his coworkers experienced a sense of joy they never had before. He says, "We were celebrating like we had just won a million dollars.... I think it changed me." I know, I was expecting a crazy, trippy story, too.
