Behold! The newest chapter in Josh Tillman's manic adventures as cult persona, Father John Misty
. Here, Misty takes on the part of a wine-drunk, piano bar balladeer, eye rolling hard
on a decadent new slice of schmaltz titled "Bored in the USA".
The song is the first single from Misty's new album I Love You Honeybear
and it's a beaut. But prepare for a little inner doubt as the song saunters by. Can you tell if Misty's having a go at you directly, or just the culture that you're unequivocally a part of? I can't. But that's the thing about liking this man's work. He's always been a bit above his audience. Not in a Kozelek kind of way or anything. He's just intellectually superior to you and I. That's why he's up there and we're down here. Anyway...
"Bored In the USA" is a ballad for all those highly educated, slave-to-the-bank, underemployed, white Jesus worshiping suckers out there...supreme satire slabbed on real
thick, complete with a laugh track. YUP. A fucking laugh track serving as exclamation point for the "useless education", "sub-prime loan", and "craftsman home" he's grown so apathetic to. But the canned crack ups are kind of a relief, letting everyone involved out from under the weight of the matter. How serious is this supposed to be? Not very, obviously. But then again, he's kind of got a point, right?
I Love You Honeybear
will be released on February 10th.
