After seeing Smallpools
kill it at Irving Plaza in NYC, we knew we had to make them our next Cool Buzz band to talk about. The LA based four-piece has been busy in 2014, touring, recording, and hitting up stages at huge music festivals like Lollapalooza. They gain new fans with each new show and they're some of the nicest guys we've had the pleasure of meeting in music.
We hit them with a few fun questions to give fans a closer look at what they're like when showtime is over and the answers are pretty fucking great. Check out what they had to say below.
What album can immediately transport you to another time?
The New Radicals album "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" transports me to a place of happiness. Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" & "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" bring me back to car rides with my dad. Anything off of the "Batman Forever" soundtrack takes me back to the swim club & '95.
Who in music would you love to hear cover a Smallpools song and which one would it be?
I'd love to hear Roland & Curt of Tears for Fears cover one of our songs, although I'm not sure which one it would be. Maybe "Killer Whales"?
What were you like as teenagers?
From what I gathered.. Sean was really good at sports & piano but very quiet. Beau was the cool snowboarder dude who gave drum lessons to his friends. Joe was a rebellious chorus kid & I was the shy kid with a Rufio shirt whose name you probably didn't know.
What is the most unexpected music your fans would find on your spotify/ipod?
Spice Girls. This world is so messed up & crazy sometimes, I don't think anything should be surprising to anyone anymore.
What is the dumbest thing that has inspired a Smallpools song?
Everything Sean & I did during the first year of living in LA was really dumb but it ultimately led to the creation of the band which usually doesn't feel dumb. Dumb & Dumber & Point Break are legitimate inspirations too, great stuff.
Outside of music, what would your dream job be?
Can't think of one. I guess being a chairman of some company when you're so high up the corporate ladder you don't have to do anything except fly around in private jets & pay for personal escorts..that would be probably be enjoyable for at least a week.
What small things can make you excited?
Clean socks, a shower, mouthwash & fast internet.
What kind of fan do you like to find and focus on in the crowd?
I'm being serious and I mean this in the most appreciative way ever.. the 40-year-old man in the back of the audience, jumping around.. having the time of his life is my absolute favorite type of fan. There are usually a few of those at every show and you just know that their main reason in being there is to enjoy the music and let loose. No ulterior motives, they like the songs & want to see them live. When I see that type of fan having fun it makes me feel like we're doing something right.
How much thought goes into your stage wear?
We all usually decide upon a few outfits pre-tour that we'll rotate throughout the tour, that way we don't need to put much thought into before the set.
Who in music intimidates you?
Chris Brown, he's terrifying.
How do you want people to feel after a Smallpools show?
AMAZING & hopefully inspired enough to pick up an instrument to spread the feeling eventually.
You guys like french fries?
Who doesn't? Especially with gravy & cheese.
