At this point Sun Kil Moon
's Mark Kozelek is in a feud by himself. Kozelek's a cynic with a rusty edge to his sense of humor, and The War on Drugs
just can't really be bothered.
Kozelek made some trash talk comments about The War on Drugs at the Ottawa Folk Festival in Canada a couple weeks ago. Sun Kil Moon was hitting some brick walls with their set due to the sound bleeding from The War on Drugs stage, provoking some rude stage banter from Kozelek along the lines of, "I hate that beer-commercial lead-guitar shit." Rude, but whatever, was pretty much the general consensus from The War on Drugs, whose twitter inquiries are about the only participation on their side:
Kozelek then released what some people grievously misread as an apology, but was intended as an explanation of his comments, and not an apology.
The definitely not an apology:
"September 17, 2014
To War On Drugs from Mark Kozelek in regards to Ottawa:
I had never heard of your band prior to taking the stage in Ottawa the other night. But to give you an idea of how bad the bleed was, my drummer said that it would have been easier for him to play along to your set than ours. It could have been any bands music blaring from over the hill, and I still would have made jokes.
I hope to catch your set someday when its not drowning out my own. The schedule wasnt your faultI get it. That was my third rodeo with The Ottawa Bleed Fest. Theyre still figuring things out over there. I hope they get it together someday.
Peace and all the best,
"To Pitchfork, Stereogum, and anyone reading this: I did not apologize to War On Drugs. I gave them an explanation of the events that lead to my comments. I do not, and will not, apologize for stage banter. I was just letting WOD know that it wasnt personal.
There is an epidemic of people being 'offended by things as some kind of hobby. Anyone offended by the H word needs to be glad their country isnt being invaded by missiles. Rock-A-Billy is still a genre of music so spare me your whining about Hillbilly being offensive.
War On Drugs. Due to all of the fuss, I checked out your live track on Pitchfork, and I called it right. You sound like Don Henley meets John Cougar meets Dire Straits meets Born In The USA era Bruce Springsteen. Its not a criticism, its an observation.
I challenge War On Drugs to let me join them onstage and play a hilarious song Ive written called: War On Drugs: Suck My Cock/Sun Kil Moon: Go Fuck Yourself at the Fillmore, October 6th, provided they let me handle the beer commercial lead guitar.
I dont have Twitter or Facebook ( I make albums) so if youre interested in having a laugh with me onstage, contact my publicist Robert Vickers.
The War on Drugs declined Kozelek's challenge, and the joke track became a diss track that pretty much takes shots at every instance of the "epidemic of people being offended," by Kozelek calling them names. This includes the entire state of North Carolina, and the blogger who was the first to report on Kozelek's performance at the Hopscotch Festival, during which he angrily referred to the loud crowd as a bunch of "fuckin' hillbillies." Listen to the track below:
Look Kozelek, you're an abrasive grouch, it's very rock n' roll, I just feel like you haven't yet realized that you're the only one throwing fuel on this fire.
