In a recent interview, auto-tune tycoon T-Pain discussed his frustration with the rampant misuse of auto-tune in the music industry today; "I use it to turn my voice into an instrument. And, don't get me wrong, there are a lot of guys that use auto-tune that cannot sing." He explained that when one uses auto-tune correctly, it shouldn't a crutch for somebody to cover up their ineptitude with tone or timbre, but instead a tool to enhance and transform one's vocals.
According to T-Pain, singers like Chris Brown and Jamie Foxx have harnessed the power of the program (with help and guidance from himself, of course) while most other artists, specifically Kanye West, have misused it horribly. "He doesn't use it correctly, he said. "He makes great music with it, but he sings without it first, and then he puts it on it and you don't know how it's going to turn out. You can't catch the mistakes before they happen."
Okay, T-Pain, I feel you, and in a lot of ways I agree, but let's be real—what does your sound like without auto-tune? If you're such a great singer, how come we've never heard your voice, bone-dry, standing alone without all of the bells and whistles?
That being said, love you guy.
