The music of Dirty Beaches
is hard to pin down. It most definitely has it's roots in early rock n' roll and rockabilly, but its more than just updated versions of those genres. Alex Hungtai turns them on their ear, giving us avant-garde re-imaginings of music that is familiar to us. His music is often described as nostalgic, but it is more than that. Hungtai is able to reinterpret the past to give us something completely new and different, not merely recreate it for nostalgia's sake.
With that said, Huntai recently stopped by the Big Car Gallery to give one of his signature performances. The song, "Untitled 2," features Huntai's effect laden voice and erratic guitar, a staccato sax riff, and bass-heavy electronic drums. The song is chaotic and familiar simultaneously, a testament to Hungtai's songwriting talents. When he counts off the song with the phrase "Rock that shit," you know you're in for a sonic treat. The song, along with "Untitled 1
" below, is an unreleased cut from Dirty Beaches stand-out album, Badlands
. Give your ears a treat and check out both songs. They definitely deserve it.
