It's been a minute since we heard new solo Gwen Stefani
, but between fronting No Doubt, running four clothing lines, coaching on The Voice
and being a mother of three, Stefani still found time record and drop her new single, "Baby Don't Lie."
While the first ten seconds sound like a throwback to Britney Spears, "I'm A Slave For You," the song then drops into a synth beat, which carries Stefani through the 3:22 minute song. Listening to "Baby Don't Lie" can't help but draw comparisons to Rihanna, as it seems to be cut from the same musical cloth.
The beat, lyrics, and even the inflection of Stefani's voice sounds very much in sync with something you'd find on a RiRi album. While Stefani is fearlessly trying something different for her sound, the song isn't built for her signature style, comes off as overwhelming and potentially a little try hard.
