Megan Washington, or just her musical moniker of Washington, hit the scene back in 2006 when her first EP dropped. She hasn't slowed down at all since then. Releasing a slew of more EPs and a full-length album, I Believe You Liar, all filled with a surprisingly far-reaching blend of ballads, pop-bangers, and energetic shuffles.
Her style jumps around from track to track, and sometimes contained within. Her tunes can be anything from light ballads to jumpy pop tunes with jangling pianos that allow Washington to show off her vocal range, sometimes laced with guitar riffs and fetching synth parts. Her voice is a focal point, as powerful and blaring as a perfectly tuned horn while being playful and inviting at the same time. The subject matter varies from angry sentiments to heartbreaking laments over life's tragedies, and at some points, violent. At the same time, Washington exudes a willingness to journey on, to get back up no matter what. "You break my jaw / Smash my nose / Knock me out / Kick my teeth in / I'm not scared," she sings on her slow burner of a track "Spanish Temper."
In short, Washington embodies a balance and reach that most artists dream of. She has something for every listener, even the most sonically jaded. Washington can play both sides of the fence, but even better than that, she is playing our CMJ showcase The Launch Pad. So come see her eclectic mix in action.
