"Everyone shake it like a fish on the line!" The Californian
is bringing a west coast dance party to our Launch Pad 2011 CMJ Showcase
on Friday, October 21st. John Graney will be performing solo on behalf of the L.A. based 4-piece band for his first NYC show ever!
Unsigned rockers The Californian just released their self-titled full-length debut. It's more than what you'd expect after reading "surf rock from California." While it does indeed deliver on the feel-good vibes of The Beach Boys (especially in the opening lick of "Shadow"), it's also imbued with more modern touches, like Kurt Vile cool in "Everybody Loves You," and psychedelic Middle Eastern elements in "The Fishermans Wife." John Graney's vocals are a great balance of old and new, and lyrics like "In my dream/the whole world died dancing" are easy to bob along with. The album is available for free preview and paid download on the band's website
, or stream it right here for an appetizer:
