Gene Simmons had a bad day, Bowery Presents had a good day, and TI had a jail. But in some ways, the real question is, what DIDN'T happen this weekend and IS going to happen now? CMJ is upon us in New York!
CMJ Week - October 19th - 23rd
It's here; five days of ridiculous, drunken venue hopping and massive hope for small bands to break big. Check out a more pensive rumination on CMJ, Pitchfork, and the changing scene from last Friday.
Gene Simmons will sue your kids.
Apparently a bunch of hackers have been making an example of Gene Simmons, who was quoted at MIPCOM with these ever-so-cautious words of wisdom for artists: "Be litigious. Sue everybody. Take their homes, their cars. Don't let anybody cross that line".
As of today at 10:02 AM, his site redirects to The Pirate Bay (bummer, but also LOLZ). That may or may not be the case when you read this, but it's further proof that the internet remains a no-mans land for intellectual pirates, no matter how much makeup you're wearing. Simmons claims the FBI are involved with pursuing the miscreants, and "they will be punished... stay tuned". [via.]
Bowery Presents renovated and reopened The State Theatre in Portland, ME.
Although Bowery Presents may be seen as "the little indie guy in New York" around the country, for most of us in this city, it's the hip, much more on point, main competitor to the Live Nation monster machine. In fact, we spend 80% of our time in Bowery Venues; Terminal 5, Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, and Music Hall Of Williamsburg have appeared countless times as the venue for our full concert shoots. So this is cool news.
We read that Bowery has helped renovate the State Theatre in Maine, a stage that has been defunct for about five years. My Morning Jacket played there last night. General Manager Lauren Wayne and Alex Crothers of Higher Ground Presents (a fixture of the New England music scene) have been overseeing the renovation on behalf of the Bowery. Could this be part of a larger expansion of the Bowery Presents?
TI is back in jail for 11 months.
TI violated parole, schwoops! And now he is going back to jail, with two weeks to turn himself in. Again.
He is going to have a hard time just living his life! (Sorry!). #obligatory

Let's start Monday with this video of how Phish sounds to me.
