New York City is the destination of the moment, with five days of drunken, overzealous music consumption and buffet-style events beginning tomorrow (10/19). On the eve of the CMJ Music Marathon, we're taking a moment to highlight a few choice parties, artists, and showcases. -joe puglisi

ARTISTS TO WATCH

Kind of like how Local Natives and Surfer Blood blew up this year after some stellar performances at CMJ 2009, the following artists seem poised and prepared to do some serious damage on the indie-rock radars of 2011:

Kisses, who hail from the city of angels, party to their own brand of retro electro, one marked by dark, new wave vibrations and hypnotic vocals. A nostalgic, yet hip update to the days of disco, Kisses' songs from their debut album Heart of the Nightlife (officially dropping in November), will probably be a hit at all of their many CMJ shows. Contagious, mysterious and dance-inducing: be prepared to sway and sweat.

For a more delicate ambiance, don't miss out on seeing Montreal experimental-rock group Braids. The band, though young, know how put together beautifully luscious arrangements, where even the most minute detail is a thoughtful and conscious decision. Braids' songs are patient and meandering — they call to mind a Broken Social Scene/Explosions in the Sky hybrid — the kinds that listeners can easily grow attached to. Recently signed to Kanine Records (Dinowalrus, Surfer Blood, The Depreciation Guild), their 2011 debut is one that I anxiously await.

Suuns sound as though they're plotting world dominance. Between their ear-shattering guitars and crunchy warped beats, the sexy and potent post-rock mix is more voluminous and epic than one might be able to handle. Which basically means you won't want to pull yourself away from whatever it is they blast through the speakers. Suuns, who are also from Montreal, just released their Secretly Canadian debut, Zeroes QC, a collection of sharp and well-crafted raunch.

SHOWCASES/PARTIES

Let's face it. There will be way too many shows going on between October 19-23 and you will most likely be torn between a gazillion of them each night. Some people make the most out of the CMJ Festival by venue-hopping (provided you have a badge and all of that), but another way to take advantage of all the good music that's gonna crowd New York City, while still being able to punish your liver with drink specials, is to pick grade-A showcases. The following are some high-quality line-ups:
