Here's what I think of when I hear the words "Slayer" or "'Raining Blood.'" I think about an overwhelming desire to smash my Guitar Hero guitar against the nearest wall as my fingers and wrist scream in agony cause it's probably the hardest song in the main story mode of that game that isn't Dragonforce's "Through the Fire And Flames."
I definitely don't think of Natalie Prass
whose debut self-titled album is one of my top 3 records of the year but, let's be honest, it's also pretty soft...like Disney Princess pop meets Sondheim soft -- which is fine. That sounds f***ing great to me. But, it's not, y'know, Slayer.
But Natalie Prass tackled the heavy metal classic for AV Undercover, and damn if I don't maybe like it more than the original? It helps that Natalie Prass can sing and while the guitars are toned down and there's less of a wall of noise, the performance still maintains that dissonance and atmosphere that made the original a crossover mainstay. I'm seeing her next month at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and here's to hoping that she pops this cover into her live rotation.
