The bonus disc for Radiohead's In Rainbows originally appeared only on the limited-edition, physical 'discbox' release of the 2007 album. Two years later, it appeared on the band's online store available for download. Now, another seven years on, we have access to stream the bonus disc. The eight tracks of almost-forgotten Radiohead magic can be heard on Apple Music and Spotify. Favorites: the piano-driven "Last Flowers" and the oddly gritty "Bangers + Mash." Listen below.
In Rainbows itself was first released as a pay-what-you-want download through the band's website. This do-it-yourself approach was groundbreaking at the time; Radiohead had just gotten out of a longtime contract with EMI and did not seem eager to negotiate a new contract. In essence, you could look at the original release of In Rainbows as an early streaming album, as the consumer had the freedom to pay nothing for the album if they wished. Confusingly enough, the album was the first Radiohead album available in digital music stores like iTunes, but the last to be added to Spotify, only appearing this past June.
It doesn't seem likely anyone can easily explain or find a pattern in Radiohead's habits of releasing music. Maybe it's just to keep us on our toes and give us a reason to revisit, or maybe discover for the first time, awesome bonus material like this. However they do it, Radiohead does it well. We couldn't possibly be happier that the full catalogue is on Spotify (our Apple Music free trials are running out fast).
