Here's the thing about Courtney Love. She's a bit of a trainwreck, but at the peak of Hole, she was an alt-rock tour de force. And, also, the only reason we fixate on her disastrous personal life the way we do is because she's a woman. The tendency is to romanticize Kurt's flaws (but we've written about that in depth before
). Anyways, it's nice to be reminded that Courtney Love is still a grunge rock queen when she wants to be, and she put her powers on display at a private party in LA recently.
The woman that made "Celebrity Skin" a fem-rock anthem may seem like a strange choice to cover Radiohead's "Creep," but that's precisely what Courtney Love did at the private house show. And, in all fairness to Ms. Love, she crushes it. Courtney Love still has a ferocious howl, and she brings it to bear in the big theatrical moments of Radiohead's first hit (and a song that Radiohead faithful will likely never get to hear live again). Maybe if we're all good boys and girls, we can get a recorded studio version of this track. We'd buy that in a heartbeat.
