Out and About: Ra Ra Riot at Webster Hall

Ra Ra Riot showcased their hypnotizing, new pop synths off their latest album, Beta Love, which was released just a short week ago. Playing to a sold out crowd (who all showed up despite the blizzard), the energy between the audience and band was absolutely infectious, and almost intimidating. The album, full of upbeat, short jams was definitely articulated on stage in a theatrical, fresh way. Rebecca Zeller's violin was appropriately bedazzled in silver gems, highlighting just what the band is all about: a great time. Without their cellist Alexandra Lawn on this album, Ra Ra Riot's experimental progression into previously uncharted waters doesn't affect their live performances with the loss. However, this didn't prevent the band from throwing it back to some old material off 2008's The Rhumb Line with "Oh La," and various other throwbacks.

What's great about Ra Ra Riot is that their communication was never lost; each instrument is illuminated in one way or another. Wes Miles' prevalence was something to admire as he belted out above the heavy instrumentals. Not to sound too cliche here, but I personally thought their delivery on "Beta Love" was by far the strongest of the entire night. They've got their precision down to a T. If you'd like to take the journey with the band into their newer sound (and not to mention killer light shows), be sure to catch Ra Ra Riot as they blaze new paths on the intertwining trails of pop, rock, dance, electronic, and indie.
