Genre jumping multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens has announced the release of his twelfth studio album. The forthcoming record marks a re-emergence of sorts, as it is said to harken back the winds and prairie sprawl of Steven's first few albums. Fans who have tracked Steven's through a number of soundscapes in his more recent artistic endeavors, including a orchestral interpretation of NYC's Brooklyn Queens Expressway, and an electronic tribute to the Chinese Zodiac, will be relieved to find a dose of the mid-western songwriter's folk roots coming swiftly down the pipes. Expect the scents of epic found in the geographically inspired turn of the millennium sound of Sufjan Steven's wildly acclaimed and madly loved Illinois and Michigan.

Carrie & Lowell, which be released via Asthmatic Kitty in a few short months, is named for Steven's mother and stepfather. The record is set to traverse on familiar artistic terrain, including life, death and the dual nature of love.

Due out March 31st, the album is now available for pre-order. Watch the record's trailer below:
