Not too long ago, we introduced to you to LA based music darlings, Wardell. Their alternative pop sound has got us hooked, and after watching their fresh and fun video
for "Funny Thing" over and over, we knew we had to get Sasha and Theo Spielberg to answer our Cool Buzz Q&A so we could get to know them a little better.
Suffice to say, they did not disappoint. Their answers are just as entertaining, thoughtful and unique as their music. Check out what they had to say below!
Wardell's album Love/Idleness
is set for a self-release on February 10th.
What is the most surprising or unexpected thing to happen to you as a recording artist?
Unexpected, one day we were in the studio and kind of finished with the album and Theo had this song he had been fiddling around with for years. So we recorded it, totally unfinished and saw what came out and it was completely unexpectedly raw and is Virginia, Wait. That really surprised us, how it turned out.
Best life advice youve ever received that resonated with choices youve made to make your music dreams come true?
When I was in ninth grade (sasha), I was getting Cs in math and science. But all I wanted to do was be in the musical. I one day broke down to my mom and she said to me, well then be in the musical and I said but then Ill get bad grades in math and science and she said so what? The minute I started rehearsals was the minute I started doing better in math. I think you just kind of have to go for it and not worry what else works out or doesnt work out peripherally. And the point of this story was so I could humble brag that I became good at math
What music artist would make you fan-out and get nervous if put in the same room?
Stevie Nicks. Fiona Apple. Bob Dylan. Stephen Malkmus.
Which music artist do you think has the best Instagram and why?
BadGalRiri of course. Its just so exciting and unpredictable!
What reputation would you like to have among your fans?
We just want to be COOL! Just kidding. We know were very nerdy at the heart of everything. So maybe they should just know that.
Are you two into tattoos? If you had to get one to represent Wardell (if you havent already) what would it be and where would you get it?
Probably we would each get face tattoos of each others surprised face. I (Sasha) have this theory I cant get tattoos because my skin is too pale but really its because my dad would be sad.
What makes Wardell stand out from every other band on the rise?
I think were doing exactly what every other band on the rise is doing which is staying present and really just sticking to what we believe in.
What ghost of musics past do you wish would haunt you?
Mama Cass to sing me lullabies. Gram Parsons been giving me cooking lessons.
Has it ever been hard to separate the brother sister dynamic from the musical duo dynamic?
Not at all. We fight when we fight, we make up when we make up and when were done writing we eat dinner with our parents.
Who do you play your music for first? Does their opinion make or break your decision on if a song is finish for not?
Usually its a boyfriend. For me. Or our friend Sam Boyd. For me I usually play it for my one or two friends who have heard our music through the years.
If someone took you to McDonalds, what would you order?
Fries and an Oreo mcflurry. And Chicken nuggets. Our frist song we wrote was entitled Chicken nuggets as a matter of fact.
