Show Review

Justin Vernon's Volcano Choir offer something hypnotic, introspective, and ultimately open to debate on their debut disc Unmap (Read the Review). Why just last week we declared the record "...demands patience as it retreats from structure and construction, metastasizing into abstract experiments of sound, dynamics, and texture." There is no clear cut story line, no themes to latch on to... Naturally, the group's new video for "Island, Is" follows suit.

A single shot of choreographed light dancing across the face of a bridge pillar, this video is simple and vague, eventually wasting away with the coming of natural daylight. Probably not as good as actually grazing upon unknown banks by an unknown river watching the show, but it'll do. And hey...it may even give hints as to what the light show might look like if/when they hit the road? No word on that just yet. - David Pitz

Artist Bio

Volcano Choir are an indie band that started as a collaboration between Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) and Collections of Colonies of Bees. Their music combines Vernon's soft vocals with Collections of Colonies of Bees' post rock sound. Their debut album is Unmap and was released on September 22, 2009. It reached number 92 on the Billboard top 200 chart.

The project originally came together with songs being written in 2005. It was not recorded until the fall of 2008 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

Since then, Jon Mueller (Death Blues) and Thomas Wincek (of All Tiny Creatures) have left Collections of Colonies of Bees, but continue to be members of Volcano Choir. They've also added Matthew Skemp on bass, who also plays in All Tiny Creatures.

It was announced on May 28, 2013 that Volcano Choir will release a second studio album entitled 'Repave' on September 3, 2013 on Jagjaguwar records.
