Monogold is a three piece hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Their DIY approach to music has enabled them to self record and produce their own sound in their personal studio. Their most recent release and first full-length album is 2011's "The Softest Glow." Their 2009 EP, "We Animals," continues to receive rave reviews from blogs and magazines throughout the US and abroad.
In November 2011 the band was chosen to perform at the press release for GOOGLE MUSIC in Los Angeles, and performed with such artists as Busta Rhymes, Maroon 5, and Drake.
The name Monogold itself was inspired by an artist of the '50s and '60s named Yves Klein. He detested his main client base which was mostly the French bourgeois, so he made them an offer that if they gave him their gold jewelry hed melt it down to tempera and make a painting with it for them. Instead he stole their gold and sold them back paintings made out of gold leaf, under the guise of course as performance art. These paintings were called Monogolds.
The Wall Street Journal chose Monogold as a band to see at CMJ 2010, saying, "...bassist Mike Falotico and drummer Jared Apuzzo build rhythmic foundations for guitarist-vocalist Keith Kelly to inhabit with his reverberative falsetto and ringing, euphonic chords. Monogold crafts six-string dreamscapes."
The Deli Magazine named Monogold the Best Avant-Indie Band in NYC: "The serene rhythmic percussions, Keith Kelly's whispering vocals, and the music's mystical qualities have therapeutic powers. Gorgeous music."
I Guess I'm Floating claims, "Monogold have crafted a sound strong enough to make heads nod and ears contentedly sigh."
The sound is a product of the band's wide spectrum of musical tastes. Influences range from 50's do-wop, to indie new wave, to avant-garde, to folk and shoegaze. After many regional and national shows and years of poverty, Monogold has acquired a sound all their own.
