In their recent promotional video featuring Steve Vai, 2cellos have hung a lantern on the novelty value of their act. Fulfilling the long sought after dream of any Misfits-t-shirt-wearing teenager, the dynamic duo walk into a Guitar Center with unprecedented nonchalance, and erupt into a distortion-heavy cello cover of Highway to Hell. 2cellos manages to distract and apprehend a feverish Steve Vai fan club from their autograph session and move Vai to jump in and do some shreddin with them. When we called them for a comment on the video, they answered, Cello? Oh brother.
2CELLOS ARE Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser. In early 2011, 2CELLOS created and recorded for video their sensational arrangement of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" and posted it on youtube. Three short months later, the video achieved 6 million hits, secured them a recording deal with Sony Masterworks, a rave on the Huffington Post, an appearance on the Ellen show, and a tour with Sir Elton John. Their debut album was released in Europe in early June and they achieved a #1 position on the iTUNES Classical chart in Germany.
Luka and Stjepan are extremely accomplished musicians both having played the cello since childhood. They recently completed their studies, Luka at the acclaimed Royal Academy of Music in London, and Stjepan at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
Luka has performed all over the world at renowned venues including Londons Wigmore Hall, Amsterdams Concertgebouw, Viennas Musikverein and Konzerthaus. He has won a series of international prizes including first prize at the VII Lutoslawski International Cello Competition (Warsaw, 2009).
Stjepan has also performed around the world in most European countries, South Africa, New Zealand, Asia and the USA, with debuts in Londons Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, South Bank Centre and Amsterdams Concertgebouw. He was the last pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich. In his short career, Stjepan has already been awarded first prize in twenty-one national and international competitions, and he has performed twice for Prince Charles at Buckingham and St James's Palace.
Most recently, at Sir Elton John's request, Stjepan and Luka have joined Eltons legendary band for a tour throughout Europe. Their self titled album, "2CELLOS", was released in June 2011 to great acclaim, and their followup video, "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns 'N Roses, has achieved close to 2 million hits in a month proving that lightning really can, with talent and a unique youthful vision, strike twice. Next up for 2CELLOS is the iTUNES Festival in London and a continuation of their Elton tour in North and South America in the Fall.
