THE GUIDE TO FALL FESTIVALS

As of September 21st summer has officially left the building, but that doesn't mean the party has to end. It is now open season on fall music festivals, and that means cooler weather, cheaper plane fares, and an endless supply of new music. Check out our list of events kicking off around the country this October and sample live concerts from some of the headliners right here on Baeble Music. So come on, take a few "swine flu" sick days and catch a festival or two, you deserve it.

1. Austin City Limits Music Festival

In the tradition of the PBS TV show from which it was born, the 8th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival offers a wide variety of artists for your listening pleasure. Everything from indie, pop, bluegrass, hip-hop, folk, blues, and gospel will take the stage at Zilker Park in "keep Austin weird", Texas October 2nd-4th. This year's lineup include Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beastie Boys, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Bon Iver,and don't forget to watch Blitzen Trapper live at The Mercury Lounge before they rock out in Austin.

2. Treasure Island Festival

Sometimes these festivals are a little overwhelming; the huge fairgrounds, too many conflicting set times, and by the third day, it's a struggle. The 3rd annual Treasure Island Festival in San Francisco Bay October 17th-18th is the remedy to all these festivals woes with its NorCal two-day mantra: day one bumps and raves with electronica and hip-hop, day two is rock and indie music; clear and convenient with a really solid lineup. Highlights include MGMT, The Streets, Passion Pit, Thao with the Get Down Stay Downs, Yo La Tango, and Beirut who played a great set in Brooklyn last February. 3. CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival

CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival is now in it's 29th year and its list of past performers looks like a run down of the rock and roll hall of fame. The "marathon" consists of a lengthy collection of shows played at various venues in downtown Manhattan from October 20th-24th, with its home base at New York University. The list of other events include sponsored parties, daytime exhibits, technology fair, meet and greets, panels, and seminars. The complete schedule is still unavailable, but confirmed artists for 2009 include The xx, Owen, The Spinto Band, The Antlers and before you see them live, watch our exclusive footage of Japandriods live at Pianos in NYC.

4. Voodoo Experience

If you didn't make it down to the Big Easy this year for Mardi Gras or the Jazz Fest, The 10th annual Voodoo Experience is your one last (and a lot less humid) chance. Located in Tad Gormley Stadium in the historic City Park, The Voodoo Experience offers a blend of big name acts like Kiss and Eminem, samplings of local Louisiana jazz, zydeco, and blues arists, and various indie and emerging bands. This year's lineup includes Fischerspooner, The Flaming Lips, Meat Puppets, and before you head down, catch our The Black Lips live at McCarren Park concert footage (embed not available).

5. Fun Fun Fun Fest

Rounding out our list of fall festivals we head back to Austin, TX for the fun Fun Fun Fest November 7th-8th. The fest brings together a variety of underground and progressive artists with a focus on punk, hip-hop, and indie acts. Located in downtown Austin's Waterloo Park, the urban festival is slightly more accessible than its Coachella counterparts and significantly less expensive. The 2009 lineup includes Ratatat, Yesayer, WHY?, and Of Montreal, who you can check out in their live at the Roseland Theater concert video.-amelia trask
