t.g.i.mixtape: y.b.p. edition - 8/21/2009 |

The only thing better than music itself is music that helps other people. This is what the creators of The Yellow Bird Project, a Montreal based charity have realized in the fabrication of one of our favorite non-profit organizations. In case you haven't heard, The Yellow Bird Project (YBP) is a non-profit organization that sells t-shirts designed by some of our favorite musicians, with all of the proceeds going to the charity of the band or artist's choosing. So for this week's T.G.I.Mixtape we are going to pay tribute to YBP and some of the great bands that have become a part of the YBP family. -Greg Lozoff

1. Stars - "Division" To start us off on this very special edition of our T.G.I.Mixtape series we have a B-side from Stars' latest album, In Our Bedroom After The War. Amy Milan takes the vocal reins on most of this dreamy little number, but Torq fans have no fear; if you hang on long enough you will get to hear from your man too. Stars was also one of the first bands to create a design for YBP. Check it out here.
2. Of Montreal - "Alter Eagle" Here's a petty new song by our favorite electro-glam rockers Of Montreal. The song, which is on the band's latest ID Engager Single pretty much goes right along the same path as their latest Skeletal Lamping LP, with front-man Kevin Barnes still fully embracing his alter-ego Georgie Fruit. What should be interesting is the band's next album, which apparently describes Georgie Fruit's death and the emergence of Barnes' new alter ego. Of Montreal is also the latest band to design a T-shirt for YBP. Check it out here.
3. Uninhabitable Mansions - "Do You Have A Strategy?" Here we get two YBP artists for the price of one. Uninhabitable Mansions is a band made up of Robbie Guertin and Tyler Sargent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Annie Hart from Au Revoir Simone. They only have a few songs recorded but what they have recorded sounds great. Have a listen to "Do You Have A Strategy?" from their debut self titled record featuring only two songs. Click here to check out Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's design and here for Au Revoir Simone's.
4. Broken Social Scene - "Needle In The Head" Have you been wondering what Broken Social Scene have been up to besides recording albums written by individual BSS members? They have been writing film scores of course! Did you happen to see that movie with Ellen Page called The Tracy Fragments. Did you happen to notice the exceptional music in the film? Well that is thanks to Broken Social Scene who wrote the score to the film. Here is one of the songs they wrote special for the film called "Needle In The Head". And you can check out their design here.
5. k-os (feat. Emily Haines and Murray Lightburn) - "Uptown Girl" Toronto, Ontario's k-os represents as YBP's only hip hop artist. He has been blurring the lines between genres for years and "Uptown Girl", from k-os' latest LP, Yes! is more of a rock song than anything else. And if you don't believe us, maybe the song's two guest stars will be able to convince you. Oh did I mention they are none other than Metric's Emily Haines and The Dears' Murray Lightburn? There's just a pile of talent on this one. Click here to check out k-os' design and click here to check out The Dears' design, designed by Murray and Natalia's three year old daughter, Neptune. How cute.
6. Holly Throsby - "A Heart Divided" Holly Throsby is one of those very special artists that you come across and feel privileged to know because of how good their music is, and how under-appreciated they are. Perhaps her music hasn't reached the ears of many other than those that live in her native Australia, but thanks to YBP Holly Throsby has become a regular every day name around here. Here is "A Heart Divided" from her latest full length, entitled A Loud Call. Her design is also pretty cute, check it out here.
7. Elvis Perkins in Dearland - "Slow Doomsday" Elvis Perkins, who has one of the nicest t-shirts in the YBP catalogue isn't wasting any time with a follow-up to his excellent latest album, Elvis Perkins In Dearland. On October 20th, Perkins will release a brand new EP called The Doomsday EP. This song, which is basically a slower version of the song "Doomsday", which can be found on the LP is one of six new songs that we can't wait to hear. Oh and that awesome t-shirt we were talking about can be found here.
8. The National (feat. St. Vincent) - "Sleep All Summer" (Crooked Fingers cover) If you are anything like us, you are very familiar with The National's latest album, Boxer. So we thought instead of posting a track from that album we would give you something extra special. This is a cover of Crooked Fingers' "Sleep All Summer", performed by The National, along with the incredibly talented St. Vincent. Check out The National's design here.
9. King Creosote - "Camels Swapped For Wives" Perhaps our favorite YBP design of all is by Scottish singer/songwriter Kenny Anderson, or as most know him, King Creosote. Anderson has been putting out music for over a decade now and doesn't appear to be slowing down, with his latest work, Flick The Vs only a few months old. Here is a lovely song from that album called "Camels Swapped For Wives". And you can check out King Creosote's beautiful design here.
10. The Tallest Man On Earth - "Field of Birds" (YBP Theme Song) Finally, to cap off this week's special edition mixtape we thought what better than to use The Yellow Bird Project's own theme song, which was written by none other than The Tallest Man On Earth. Fittingly enough, the song is called "Field of Birds" and is available for free download here.
Well that's all for this week's mixtape, but have you heard about YBP's Indie Rock Coloring Book? It is perhaps one of the coolest things we've ever seen. Click here for more info. | | Permalink Share To: |
