Happy Friday everyone! It is time once again for the next edition in our T.G.I.Mixtape series. On this, the 27th edition, we have brand new music from some of the brightest names in indie rock. Bands like Volcano Choir, Owl City, The Dodos and much much more. Enjoy the tunes! -Greg Lozoff

1. Volcano Choir - "Island, IS"
To start us off this week we have the highly anticipated first single from Justin Vernon's side project Volcano Choir. What most people don't know is that this isn't a new band. In fact, Volcano Choir has been making music together even before everybody and their grandmother knew the words to "Flume". I guess it just took them awhile to get some things down on tape considering how Bon Iver exploded onto the scene. Well now we can finally here some of these songs, some of which were written as far back as 2005. This one is called "Island, IS". The rest of the album will be available for purchase on September 22, so be sure to watch out for it.
2. Oh Bijou - "Black Ice"
This one is a brand new track off of Ohbijou's latest album, Beacons. While these Canadians have rocking us gently with their brand of orchestral pop for some time now it appears they have really come into their own on Beacons, which may just be their best work to date. They also have an enormous tour coming up that will take them from Holland to Germany until finally they return home with a slew of Canadian dates. So be sure to check them out in a city near you.
3. The Dodos - "Fables"
Here's another brand new track from The Dodos latest release, Time To Die. The band that started off as a duo of Meric Long and Logan Kroeber now has a full time vibraphone player that goes by the name of Keaton Snyder. As if they weren't already unique enough. The new album picks up right where their previous release, Visiter left off, with drums and guitar aplenty and now some vibraphone to give the songs a little bit of a bittersweet feel to them.
4. Johnny Flynn - "Tickle Me Pink"
Here's a fun little track by London, England's Johnny Flynn. The song can be found on Flynn's lovely debut album, A Larum which is in stores now. Most of the time you can catch Flynn playing shows in and around London with friends Laura Marling, Alessi's Ark, Peggy Sue, Mumford and Sons (to name a few). That's quite a talented posse if you ask me.
5. Religious Girls - "White Mage"
We don't know much about Religious Girls (except that they don't go out on Friday nights...zing!) but what we do know is that they are from East Bay, California and are in fact boys who make some harsh, tribal, drum heavy experimental rock music reminiscent of HEALTH and Animal Collective. They have just finished a tour in support of their debut album, Open Your Heart To Fantasy and are currently hard at work on some new material. Stay tuned for that.
6. Owl City - "Fireflies"
Here is the latest from The Postal...erm... Owl City. While it is easy to draw comparisons to The Postal Service, Owl City differs from Ben Gibbard's well known side project in several ways. The music is poppier, happier and perhaps even dancier. While Adam Young's lyrics can at times be cheesier than Gibbard's there are still times when you'd swear it was Gibbard himself singing. And since there doesn't appear to be any new Postal Service music on the horizon, Owl City is certainly a welcome substitute in the meantime.
7. Joe Pernice - "Chim Cheree"
Here is a haunting cover of the Dick Van Dyke classic "Chim Cheree" that we all know and love from Mary Poppins. This song can be found on It Feels So Good When I Stop, Joe Pernice's latest album that accompanies his debut novel that goes by the same name. Apparently, in the novel there are a lot of references to music so Pernice thought it would be a good idea to release an album to go along with the novel. Sounds like a great idea.
8. Brendan Benson - "A Whole Lot Better"
Brendan Benson has finally returned with his long awaited follow-up to his 2005 release, The Alternative To Love. Not that his work with The Raconteurs hasn't been greatly appreciated, but it's just good to see Benson back doing what he does best. And that is writing incredible catchy and delicious pop songs. "A Whole Lot Better" is the lead track from his forthcoming LP, entitled My Old, Familiar Friend, which hits stores on the 18th of August.
9. Young Galaxy - "Destroyer"
Here's one from one of Arts and Crafts newest signees Young Galaxy. Arts and Crafts has become a pretty safe bet when it comes to good bands so it should come as no surprise that Young Galaxy is pretty excellent. "Destroyer" can be found on their latest album, Invisible Republic, out on August 25.
10. The Happies - "Another Sleepy Morning"
To end this week's mixtape we have what might be the cutest song in the world. There's not much information out there about this Salt Lake City five piece, The Happies, and their myspace page hasn't been updated in a long time, but we stumbled upon this song and thought that we needed to share it with you. |  | Permalink Share To:       |
