Hello out there! It's time once again for the next edition of our T.G.I.Mixtape series. On this, the 34th volume in the series, we have some incredible new songs by some really great up and coming artists in the indie music world. Bands like Le Loup, Washed Out and Girls may not be household names just yet, but wait a few more months and odds are they will be everywhere. And that's just the beginning because we have a bunch of other songs that will surely rock your boat. Enjoy! -Greg Lozoff

1. Girls - "Lust For Life"
Girls debut album, simply entitled Album has been getting a lot of love around the net these days. In case you aren't aware, Girls are actually a group of guys from California who make raw and grungy surf punk. So to start off this week's mixtape we have "Lust For Life", a song that while sounding unpolished, has a certain bittersweet innocence to it that could warm even the iciest of hearts.
2. Sky Larkin - "Smarts"
Sky Larkin is a indie rock trio coming out of Leeds, England. They have been together since 2005 but have only just released their debut LP this year, entitled The Golden Spike. The trio is made up of bassist Doug Adams, drummer Nestor Matthews and the charismatic and talented lead singer and guitarist Katie Harkin, who gives the band their zest and overall appeal. "Smarts" is the trio's latest single and it was recorded not too long ago in Wales and is pretty much the band's loudest song to date.
3. Miss Li - "Bourgeois Shangri-La"
Apple has done it again. Everyone went crazy for Feist when they made that commercial featuring her song "1234". Then it was CSS' turn to taste the fame that comes along with being in an Apple commercial when Apple used their song "Music Is My Hot Hot Sex" to promote the latest Ipod Touch. And then it was Chairlift's turn. But now the Apple spotlight is shinning brightly on another rising indie starlet by the name of Miss Li. You have no doubt seen and heard the new ad for Ipod Nano with this rediculously catchy little gem attached to it. Well if you haven't yet, nows your chance.
4. Hot Chip and Peter Gabriel - "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" (Vampire Weekend Cover)
While you may have thought that it would be impossible to improve upon Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa", Hot Chip and Peter Gabriel have decided to give it a shot anyways. Whether or not this is an improvement isn't really the issue here though. Let's face it...it's just pretty freaking cool that Peter Gabriel did this in the first place. And instead of singing the original line of "This feels so unnatural, Peter Gabriel too" he sings, "It feels so unnatural to sing your own name". Brilliant.
5. Washed Out - "Get Up"
Washed Out is the perfect way to describe the music of Ernest Greene, a South Carolina native who now calls Macon, Georgia his home. On his debut Life of Leisure EP we get 5 tracks of "washed out", laid back, 80s inspired dance tracks that while they are very lazy sounding, seem to pulse with life. He started out by putting his songs down on cassette only, but has since decided to release this EP digitally through Mexican Summer. His next EP, entitled High Times will be released shortly, but will unfortunately be issued on cassette only.
6. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - "Higher Than The Stars"
Next we have a brand new song by New York's The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart called "Higher Than The Stars", off of their latest EP of the same name. The band seems to be embracing a more 80s electronica feel than they have in the past and everything on this EP just seems a little clearer and less fuzzy. Whether or not this is a good thing is for you decide, but we sure like it.
7. Le Loup - "Morning Song"
Here is a beautiful little song by an American band with a French name. While the rest of Le Loup's debut album, Family is as odd and eclectic as can be, "Morning Song" has the band sounding a little more restrained. Not that this is a bad thing. In fact, the song actually sounds kind of like a mixture of Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes, which is pretty good company to be compared to.
8. WHY? - "January Twenty Something"
We have been anticipated WHY?'s new album for some time now. It is called Eskimo Snow and we are absolutely loving it. "January Twenty Something" starts out sounding like something that might fit perfectly on a Sufjan Stevens album, but then you hear lead singer Jonathan Wolf's recognizable drawl and you know that it is unmistakably WHY?.
9. Kings of Convenience - "24-25"
Today marks the release of Kings of Convenience's new album, entitled Declaration of Dependance. It's been an excruciatingly long five years between The Kings' last two albums and it appears upon first listen that the duo hasn't lost their touch. Just listen to "24-25", the album's opening track and you'll understand. It's nice to see a band sticking to what they do best, and that is writing peaceful and serene acoustic jams reminiscent of the days of Simon and Garfunkel.
10. Telefon Tel Aviv - "The Birds"
At almost seven minutes in length, this may be the longest song we've ever had on any of our mixtapes, but believe us when we say that this song is worth every second. The story behind Telefon Tel Aviv is a little bit sad. They started out as a duo, but when Charles Cooper was found dead one day as a result of an accidental mix of alcohol and sleeping pills, the other half of the duo, Joshua Eustis, was forced to become a solo musician overnight. "The Birds" is the lead track from the last album that the duo was able to work on together and provides the perfect conclusion to this week's mixtape. |  | Permalink Share To:       |
