Everybody has a bad week every now and then. Sometimes you are bad and mom sends you to your room and you miss the party at Chuck E. Cheese, and everyone talks about the ball pit all week. Sometimes you total your car and have to take the bus to work. Sometimes you are homeless for five days. Sometimes you drop your sandwich at lunch. These things happen to everyone.* Luckily, we all have our ways of dealing with stress, and one of them is mixtapes. So let's listen together!
This week we've got a bunch of new songs to share... and some previews of great things to come. 2010 is still killing it.

1. "Wide Eyes" - Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
After CMJ, I've kept a close eye on this LA collective. Gorilla Manor may seem like a funny name... it refers to the house they all live in together, which is a totally cool way to be in a band. The record is out in the UK, and it will see a stateside release in a week and a half, so it's time to start toe tapping to some of their stuff you haven't heard yet... unless of course you're really into paying double for imports (or stealing).
2. "You Must Be Out Of Your Mind" - The Magnetic Fields - Realism
Many people are sad to see the no-synth trilogy come to an end, but the Magnetic Fields have done some really great stuff with it and I can't wait to see them play with artificial sound for the first time in years. For the time being, we'll settle for the sarcastic, clever lyricism and catchy choruses of Realism. This particular one is great; a love song about narcissism, insults, and being real.
3. "Acts Of Man" - Midlake - The Courage Of Others
The supreme overloads of Pitchfork panned this album, and I think they suck. Really, the even-tempered flow of Courage is purposefully mellowed and sedated, as if to pull us deeper into the Midlake trance, and it's actually very calming and enjoyable for those of us who recently dropped sandwiches.
4. "Flume (Bon Iver Cover)" - Peter Gabriel - Scratch My Back
Peter Gabriel really destroyed my preconceived doubts about his ability to pull off a cover record with this wonderfully minimal and emotive version of "Flume", off Bon Iver's near-perfect For Emma, Forever Ago. His selection of songs was outstanding, from Paul Simon to Radiohead to everything else in my top twenty, but this one really got me.
5. "The Sea Is A Good Place To Think" - Los Campesinos! - Romance is Boring I've been listening to to this album all day and my college-aged post-emo brain can't get enough of it. Exciting, snarky, sarcastic, British, what's not too like. It also has a really cool grasp of atmosphere. I could go on and on, but I won't... until I review the album...
6. "My Life" - jj - Jj N 3 Swedish Band + ambient electronica + the words from The GAME's song "My Life" = the most insane thing imaginable. I don't know what I like more, the premise or that it really sounds good.
7. "On Fire" - Lil' Wayne - Rebirth I'm including this song because it's one of the most hilariously bad things I think a human being has ever made. The say Lil' Wayne is a Martian and that's why he's so weird. Maybe all that cough medicine just gave him brain lesions. Words cannot describe... just listen.
8. "The Price" - Dappled Cities - Zounds
Like Wild Beasts, Dappled Cities debut album Zounds is an impressive mix of slick, sonic waves of rock and electro, paired with a wild vocal delivery that is nothing short of thrilling.
9. "Secrets" - Headlights - Wildlife
Last October Headlights stopped by the Guest Apartment, leading with this endearing pop song about the trials of life you and those you love often go through. It's pulled from their album Wildlife; a collection of songs that not surprisingly touches on the complexity of nature, though we suspect they're referring to human nature. Pick it up now on Polyvinyl.
10. "Tunnelvision" - Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic
Though they are still hard at work preparing their second album for their Secretly Canadian debut, this mystical gem from Here We Go Magic's first album seems like the perfect light and airy affair to set your Friday too. The band has lots of SXSW plans, is one of the first on board the 2010 edition of the Pitchfork Music Festival, and have a few east coast dates in the works for March. |  | Permalink Share To:       |
