Summer 2010 is just about over, and it seems like we've got plenty of tracks for bright skies and beach volleyball. But what about days when the cloud cover drops bucket after bucket of downpour? Certainly there must be some tunes from the last few months to accompany such an event? Well, today is the day. It's miserable in New York and I'm finding myself assembling a summer rainy day playlist, because that is what we do. After the jump, the top five "it's miserable out, but it's summer so I have to be lazy about being sad" songs (of 2010).
1. "Wasted Hours" (Arcade Fire, The Suburbs)
audio player
This is the quintessential summer rain song, hands down, no competition. I mean come on, staring out the window"? This is for the mid-afternoon realization that you haven't done anything yet today, and you probably won't.
2.
"Remember February" (Fauxbois, Carry On) audio player
You've ventured outside, just to kind of splash around for a minute.
3.
"Dirty Cartoons" (Menomena, Mines) audio player
You're definitely doing something that involves working through the downpour. Driving or staring out of an office window. Oh and it's 1998 for some reason.
4.
"Runaway" (The National, High Violet) audio player
Bad news on the phone, but it's OK. You're reading a book you keep putting down. Time seems to be standing still, but it keeps on raining.
"Save Your Money" (Suckers, Wild Smile) audio player
This is the "sun is almost coming out" rain, the little drizzle that is punctuated with bursts of sunlight. Or swimming in the ocean while it's literally hurricane everywhere. Your call.
Rain, rain... we're cool as long as I can nap. -
