PREVIEW: NORTHSIDE FESTIVAL 2010
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 2010

Presented by L Magazine,
Northside Festival
is a four day festival of independent music, and the closest thing the New York area has to a summer festival, incorporating venues and bars indoors and outside all over Northern Brooklyn. We've gathered a few of the best and brightest events for you New Yorkers to check out:
THURSDAY
CONCERT: WAVVES/CLOUD NOTHINGS/DOM @ THE KNITTING FACTORY-THE CRUNCH STAGE
Tickets: $12/14 day of/ doors at 8 pm/ show at 9
Wavves are known for a great live show, and this should be a great kickoff to the festival weekend &mdash their beachy sound is a good reminder that it's summertime. Then head over to Shea Stadium for an after party at 1 AM ($5).
CONCERT: THESE UNITED STATES @ MHOW
Tickets: $15/$17 day of/ doors 8/ TUS @ 9:45/ 18+
This is a big bill, which includes Thao and Mirah, so that explains the price. But These United States put on such a killer show, it's 100% worth a visit if you're holding a badge.
DJ SET: ?UESTLOVE @ BROOKLYN BOWL
Tickets: $5/$7 day of/doors at 10:30 pm/ 21+
The Bowl is bound to be a hot destination, with the infamous drummer from The Roots spinning tunes as he often does during his ongoing DJ residency.
FRIDAY
CONCERT: OBERHOFER/SONDRE LERCHE @ COCO 66
Tickets: $16/ doors at 8pm / 21+
[Myopenbar and Tammy Hart present an 826NYC Benefit]
This promises to be pretty awesome. Oberhofer is pumping out some great tunes to the streets of Brooklyn, and on Friday night the layers meet a tried-and-true songwriter in Sondre Lerche. It's a benefit, so feel good AND hear some great music.
CONCERT: AMAZING BABY/TAME IMPALA/BEIGE/PSYCHIC @ GLASSLANDS
Tickets: $10 / doors at 9pm / 21+
Come for Tame Impala and their wacked-out, synthesized Beatles psychedelics, and stay for the other buzz bands playing this pretty amazing lineup.
CONCERT: DINOSAUR FEATHERS @ PUBLIC ASSEMBLY
Tickets: $10 / doors at 6 pm / 21+
If you haven't yet seen the harmonious tunes of Dinosaur Feathers, Brooklyn's last men standing in the war for indie pop and drum machines, then you are just plain wrong. 10:30 PM is their set time and $10 gets you access to two rooms and ten other bands, curated by the now deceased Pop Tarts Suck Toasted. RIP.
SATURDAY
CONCERT: CULTS/MALE BONDING/TITUS ANDRONICUS @ NEWTOWN BARGE PARK
Ticket Price: $12 / doors at 1pm /show at 1:30pm
These three bands hit the Metro PCS outdoor stage for an afternoon show on Saturday. English pop-punkers Male Bonding, who released my favorite record of 2010 so far, have a lot of energy as do Jersey fist-pumpers Titus Andronicus who are known for their rousing live shows. Not only is it a great line-up, it's early so you have the rest of the day to hit more Northside events! Plus, it's all ages so you can bring your children or the kids you have to babysit on Saturday.
CONCERT: FOREST FIRE/RIBBONS @ BRUAR FALLS
Ticket price TBA / doors at 1 PM for BBQ / show at 2:30 pm
Forest Fire goes on at 4 and Ribbons at 5, with Younger Siblings and World Atlas opening and Hidden Fees wrapping up. Both Forest Fire and Ribbons have a full, earnest sound well suited to a Saturday afternoon barbecue.
CONCERT: CANTORA BOWL FEATURING SAVOIR ADORE/BRAHMS/TONY CASTLES/GORDON VOIDWELL @ BROOKLYN BOWL
Tickets: $5 / doors at 7 / show from 8pm - 12am
The premiere Saturday night event is an evening of bowling and music with the Baeble team, stop by on your rounds or make it your final destination to try and beat our master-bowlers to the sweet sounds of Cantora Record's finest.
More details here.
.
SUNDAY
CONCERT: ACTIVE CHILD/ISLANDS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG
Ticket price: $18/ doors at 8 PM / show at 9:00
There are four bands playing this event: TV Carnage and Steel Phantoms are before and after Active Child who goes on at 9:30 with headliner Islands finishing things up at 11. Active Child have been blowing my mind this year with their blend of falsetto-enhanced electronics and harp skills. And, of course, Islands are always a lot of fun. Should be a good show.
CONCERT: KEEPAWAY/HOORAY FOR EARTH/OH LAND @ BROOKLYN BOWL
Ticket price: $10 / doors at 6pm / 21+
Keepaway is a buzzy band from Brooklyn, and their headlining Sunday night show at our most favorite Bowling alley includes Hooray For Earth and my favorite up-and-coming Danish songstress, Oh Land.
CONCERT: LES SAVY FAV @ NEWTOWN BARGE PARK - THE METRO PCS STAGE
Ticket price: $15/$18 day of / all ages
If outside is where you want to end your four day music binge, look no further: Les Savy Fav puts on a hell of an outdoor show. This time they'll perform with support from Polvo and Grails.
