FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2012 | POSTED BY: JOE PUGLISI
We're coming down from a Coachella high, so a few select artists from our weekend in Indio make an appearance here. That, coupled with some new tunes, makes for a great Friday listen. Get to it.
New! Listen to (most of) the mixtape on Spotify!
1. "The Rifle's Spiral" - The Shins - Port of Morrow
Ever since I heard this song refered to as James Mercer's "Ready To Start," it's been stuck in my head as an excellent beginning of things song. I missed it at Coachella during my photo runs, which I am sad about.
2. "CMYK" - Badbadnotgood - BBNG2
An all-instrumental jazz-hop band focused on engadging and creative covers of more famous tunes. This one is a James Blake song, and they basically crush it. This band (which was introduced to me my first night in Rancho Mirage by the guy whose house I crashed at) factors pretty heavily into my Coachella thesis on music, EDM, rock and roll, and what the next fad will be. Their music is all totally free on their website (just click the band name).
3. "Novacane" - Frank Ocean - Nostalgia/Ultra
I have a new appreciation for this song after seeing Ocean melt an entire tent full of fans with it. Might have just been the Coachella line, but still.
4. "Rapture" - Everest - Ownerless
We're excited for another round of tunes from this Baeble band, especially since their last big single was on repeat for like, six months. The first offering shows they haven't lost any of their rootsiness, even with a more gritty, electrified sound.
5. "Sixteen Saltines" - Jack White - Blunderbuss
The best Jack White is a weird, wacky, in-your-face distorted riff with absolutely wacked lyrics. Could listen to this all day, backwards and forward.
6. "The Spells" - Mrs. Magician - Strange Heaven
We hunkered down and listened to the band that supposedly upstaged Cults at Maxwell's the other week... and we weren't disappointed. Strange Heaven is out now.
7. "Der Microarc" - Violens - True
This sounds like The Strokes if they formed in 1983.
8. "Reunion" - M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
This was their set-closer last weekend. Can this be the theme song of the Olympics or something? So epic.
9. "One Armed Scissor" - At The Drive-In - This Station Is Non-Operational
Another song I really wanted to see and missed because of another photo engadgement. Although some of the people I was with weren't feeling ATDI, this song RULES.
10. "The Fear" - Ben Howard - Every Kingdom
We'll end the 'tape with this week's featured video, a good song for winding down-- Ben Howard's awesome folk tune "The Fear." Have a great weekend 'errybody.
