We're not closing in on any holidays (aside from Groundhog's Day), and the seasons in New York City keep changing, so this week has been sort of a blahhhhhh of things. Nevertheless, it's been a great one for new tunes-- we've discovered our 2012 soulmate (the new Cloud Nothings LP) as well as some other awesome tuneage we've been terribly excited to share with you. It's the mixtape, now with less saturated fat and that same great taste.

    1. "Our Plans" - Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory

We were this close to having the mixtape just be every track from this Cloud Nothings LP, if that gives you any idea of how we feel about it.

    2. "A New Town" - Field Music - Plumb

Hopefully Field Music's new LP will remedy their relative lack of notoriety, because they write some amazingly complex and catchy melodies. Not easy to do. This track in particular is like Talking Heads disco-- who wouldn't enjoy that? Who would even imagine it?

    3. "Go Ego" - Eight and a Half - Eight and a Half

Broken Social Scene's drummer has a new project, a bit heavier than BSS work but no less layered. The LP is due out 4/10.

    4. "Peg" - The Darcys - AJA

This was a free album for people who grabbed the last Darcys album. Reminds me a lot of The Dears, which is funny, because the name kind of sounds like them too. Oh, and it rocks. It's free with an email address on their site.

    5. "Emmylou (Live On KRCW)" - First Aid Kit - Live on KCRW

This was a companion EP to The Lion's Roar. I almost prefer FAK live, those voices in their natural element, performing more than recording, has this incredible raw beauty every single time. I've seen them so many times and never been disappointed or unaffected.

    6. "Origins" - Tennis - Young and Old

Tennis for best male-female duo of the year so far, making real, funky music, totally awesome, and not at all Sleigh Bells.

    7. "Another Bed" - The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know

Another band that deserves more recognition than they usually get (in the US). New album out 2/6.

    8. "Cake" - Keepaway - Black Flute

Keepaway's debut LP kind of squeaked by without making too much of a fuss, but the nuanced soundscapes and grooves are a combination of electro-loops and live instruments unlike most everything else out there at the moment.

    9. "Hit The Ground (Superman)" - The Big Pink - Future This

Lack of recognition must be a running theme on this tape. This band writes legit pop hits (can't you hear this song on the radio?), and yet somehow, they still haven't broken the median.

    10. "Futura" - Battles - Gloss Drop

On that note, Battles dropped some of their forthcoming remixes this week and it reminded me of this song, and one of the most overlooked LPs of 2011. The high cymbal has spoken.
