  • T.G.I.MIXTAPE 113 CURATED BY BIG HARP

Take a break from 2011 and visit summers past with Big Harp. The husband-and-wife duo of Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney arranged a bunch of vintage summer songs that bring them back to different times in their lives. Head back to summers past (or in some cases, summers before you were born) with everybody from the eccentric Captain Beefheart to the ubiquitous Pixies.

    1. "Astral Weeks" - Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

I heard this record for the first time on a summer tour sometime in the early 2000s. It became the only thing I wanted to listen to. I love the whole album, but the first song (and title track) is the one that really sticks out. -Stefanie

    2. "Margaritaville" - Jimmy Buffet - Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes

Im not too cool for this song. I might not even be cool enough for this song. I love margaritas. I love the beach. Parrots kind of weird me out though. Hey, two out of three, right? -Stefanie

    3. "Cool Water" - Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs

This song is about being lost in the desert with no water, and presumably no margaritas either. Bummer. I think the Sons of the Pioneers version might be more famous, but this is the one I know best. -Chris

    4. "There Stands The Glass" - Webb Pierce - 20th Century Masters: The Best Of Webb Pierce

This will round out our little run of beverage songs. I dont know if this song is summery, but its a damn good song. -Chris

    5. "Living Without You" - Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Sings Newman

When I was pregnant with my son both of our cars only had tape decks. Nilsson Sings Newman was the only tape we had, and I really fell in love with it. This song really brings me back to that summer. -Stefanie

    6. "Frownland" - Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica

Probably the strangest and least saccharine song ever written about being happy. -Chris

    7. "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" - Otis Redding - The Very Best Of Otis Redding

Everyone likes a good nonsense syllable chorus. This is one of the best. -Chris

    8. "Ol' 55" - Tom Waits - The Early Years, Vol. 2

The summer I turned sixteen, Early Years, Vol. 2 was all I listened to in my car. -Stefanie

    9. "Here Comes Your Man" - Pixies - Doolittle

I listened to Doolittle nonstop the summer I turned 14. In fact, somewhere theres a tape floating around of me doing an interpretive dance to this song. -Stefanie
