  • MY BLOODY VALENTINE: ANTICIPATING OUR NEXT EPIC EARGASM
Since 1991 the shoegaze band, My Bloody Valentine, has hinted at developing another album. Something that could either scale similar heights as Loveless did back in '91 or transcend farther into the realm of Shields' almighty fuzzed-out atmosphere. The concept of this new album has set into our eyes back in '08 when Shields told fans a new album was in the process of being recorded. Then My Bloody Valentine played at Electric in Brixton, London Sunday night and with it was a new song, "Rough Song," as well as another announcement from Shields stating that in a few days their third album will be released.

Then the memories began swirling in my mind. I remember back in the summer of '06, when I had encountered Loveless for the first time. It was like being reintroduced to music, with all those sublime, jittery feelings as precious carry-ons. A friend of mine climbed into my car with a blank cd in his hand, slid the cd into the tray, and turned the volume knob to its peak. The metaphorical plane had ascended into some sort of wild jet-stream turbo: worlds were converging. Afterwards, I asked who it was I heard. He told me, My Bloody Valentine. I HAD to listen to more: I was hooked and asked him what he knew of them. Ever since I heard Loveless, then Isn't Anything and everything else, I've been waiting for another album, another dimension to journey through with my ears, and their propelling soundscapes.

Their music is known as shoegaze: a genre developed due to MBV members always staring at their shoes (mostly to press effect pedals and to embed themselves into their music more purely). The style has seen a multitude of followers and musicians mimicking their blasting, though mellow sound.

In it of itself, MBV's sound is grippingly atmospheric, and although sometimes it's wave driven fuzz, maxed-out amps, and shrapnel-like drums exercises a full-throttle chaos, it is a sweet chaos nonetheless. MBV is unique and translates the duplicity of our everyday lives through their delicate harmonies that progress into raging whirlwinds and dies down to a serene scene of a sunset over a green hill - this hill is especially green because they live in the green part of this world: Ireland.

This anticipation of their upcoming album had risen ridiculously when it was declared they had reunited in '07, and in '08 began playing various shows and festivals. Noteworthy to mention, their third album has been supposedly in the works on and off (and on and off again and again) since '96 and considering all the hype that's been escalating ever since then (17 years of waiting), we all have high expectations. Yet our confidence does not falter whatsoever. We're quite sure Kevin Shields, the legendary guitarist, and the dynamic quartet all have the momentum and exposure to construct yet another eargasmic album and continue their life-long careers as shoegazers.
