Alexi Murdoch - 2.7.2007 at The Mercury Lounge

bio show review discography photo gallery tour dates fans links

Singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch has taken an unwavering DIY approach to the music business. Born in London and raised in Scotland, the musician moved to L.A. in the late '90s (following a brief stint at Duke University) and began playing local gigs. KCRW's Nic Harcourt, host of the influential Morning Becomes Eclectic radio show, approached Murdoch following a show in the summer of 2002, and Murdoch's self-recorded demos were soon being played on Harcourt's show. As a result, the Four Songs EP was born out of necessity, and the songwriter soon sold 50,000 copies without signing a major-label deal.

Murdoch continued to ride the underground success of Four Songs. By 2006, standout track "Orange Sky" had already appeared on Dawson's Creek, The O.C., Prison Break, and Zach Braff's Garden State. Continuing his streak of independence, Murdoch released debut album Time Without Consequences on his own label, Zero Summer, in June 2006.

Alexi Murdoch - Time Without Consequence

Alexi Murdoch has been places. He's seen things. He's collected tales from his birthplace in London, his childhood years in Scotland and Athens, his subsequent move to North Carolina, and his recent migration to the West Coast. If the job of a singer/songwriter is to spin stories into musical narratives, then Murdoch's jetsetting experience makes him one of the most uniquely qualified storytellers out there.

But there's something more to this musician's appeal, something that greatly overshadows his well-traveled past. Murdoch's voice is deep, rich, and unassuming. His guitar playing is simple and consistent. His backing band is dependable, fully able to support Murdoch's baritone vocals with quiet guitar arpeggios or bombastic, cymbal-crashing sounds. Overall, Murdoch is simply solid, with a catalog of acoustic material that sounds equally at home in coffeehouses, TV shows, eclectic radio programming, and mega-movie soundtracks.
