Dragons of Zynth - 10.19.2007 at The FADER Sideshow

bio show review discography photo gallery tour dates fans links

Unusual to say the least, Dragons of Zynth somehow cut and paste together a dizzying fusion of jazz, punk, dub, funk, soul, and hard rock, a sound that's been referred to as "Afrotek." The band has earned a reputation for its performances, which the band itself calls "audio-physio-psychic." Based in Cleveland, Dragons of Zynth is fronted by New York City-bred twins Aku (vocals, keyboard) and Akwetey (vocals, guitar), who studied music with jazz musician Yusef Lateef. The core of the band includes friends Bizza (drums) and Autry (bass). Acclaimed New York City group TV on the Radio quickly became fans and offered them an opening spot in 2005, while later lending a hand for the fall 2007 debut, Coronation Thieves. – allmusic.com

Dragons Of Zynth - Coronation Thieves

Picking apart the pieces of Cleveland OH's ever intriguing outfit, Dragons of Zynth, is no easy ordeal. Sure, a few dives to the very depths of their hyper colored art may retrieve a few clues to the broad foundations they build their self proclaimed "audio-physio-psychic" upon. There is a bit of dub here, some streaks of soul there, and certainly enough rock chops to begin to pull the skin away from the bone. But Dragons ultimately work in mysterious ways that go unbeknownst to all but the very musicians involved…which is just fine with us. Not every musical code is meant for cracking…though we encourage you to try by checking out the band's performance at the The FADER's CMJ Sideshow - David Pitz
