Show Review

Behind Mac DeMarco's torn up jeans, oversized flannel and rambunctious attitude is a magnificent and emotive songwriter. The Canadian artist's debut full-length 2, is loaded with jangly guitar rock, which he personally describes as "jizz jazz", as well as simple and relatable lyrics about suburban life.

When we caught DeMarco and his colorful cast of characters (that's one fine-dressed bassist) down at Portals' party at Hype Hotel, the rowdy Canadian was in full swing with random outbursts while chugging beers supplied by audience members. Did we mention his set was at 1PM? But this boisterous behavior was juxtaposed as the gentler Dr. Jekyll side DeMarco's split personality radiated brilliantly through his music.

Transcript

It's been a long fucking week.
- I'm Mac, this is Pete.
Here's the joke: We're going to make some shit happen for you today, bitch.
Mommy's in the kitchen Cooking up something good
And daddy's on the sofa Pride of the neighborhood
My brother's in the ballet It seems he's got it set
And I'll be up past midnight With my cigarette
Oh when life moves this slowly Oh just try and let it go
Oh when life moves this slowly Oh just try and let it go
Daddy's in the basement Cooking up something fine
Rick's out on the pavement Flipping it for dimes
If there's anything redeeming I haven't seen it yet
And I'm still up at midnight Chewing Nicorette
Aaaaah! Oh when life moves this slowly Oh just try and let it go
Oh when life moves this slowly Oh just try and let it go
- Thanks, guys.
Yeah.
Next song we're going to play is called "The Stars Keep On Calling My Name.
" - One, two.
One, two, three, four.
Honey, the stars keep on calling my name
But don't worry I've told you again and again
When I'm down you're always the first one to know
Skipping town I'll take you wherever I go
Because I just wanna go I just wanna go
This town's really taking it's toll but don't worry
I'm all through with feeling this old When I'm down
You're always the first on my mind Skipping town
Let's get out and see what we find
Because I just wanna go I just wanna go
I just wanna go I just wanna go
Viceroy, early in the morning
Just trying to let the sun in and open up my eyes
Viceroy, as it's getting later Heading for the corner
Already running dry
Oh, don't let me see you crying
Because oh, honey, I'll smoke you 'till I'm dying
Viceroy, don't take me for a fool now I'm only trying to calm down
Just trying to keep it cool
Viceroy, as it's getting later Heading for the corner
I'm leaving it to you
And, oh don't let me see you crying
Because oh, honey, I'll smoke you 'till I'm dying
Oh Annie, knows when it's me She knows how I'm feeling
And gives me her healing Oh Annie, sit down beside me
Let me confide in you You know when I'm blue
You know when I'm lonely and honey, I'm lonely
I'm going down going down
Going down going down
Hey, Annie, my daddy won't let me My daddy won't let me go
And that's why I feel this low Oh Annie, sit down beside me
And let me confide in you You know when I'm blue
You know when I'm lonely and honey, I'm lonely
I'm going down going down
Going down going down
- Thanks, guys.
Cruising in the Moonlight Heading downtown
Looking for some fast love I've gotta get down
Some boogie woogie woman Keeps looking my way

So meet me on the dance floor Let me shake my shit
We are all just players On the rock and roll tit

Rock and Roll Night Club
- One, two.
One, two, three, four.
Up out of bed at three
And I feel like I'm dying But if she's there next to me
Then there's no use in crying
Because she's really all I need It's true my heart is flying
Life can be such a breeze As long as it's just her and me
Don't bring me down man wearing that frown man now
It's trials from my brain step into my frame now
I smell your arts degree It's telling me that I'm motherfucking lazy
I'm working so I can eat So keep that shit away from me
Because she's really all I need It's true my heart is flying
Life can be such a breeze As long as it's just her and me
Don't bring me down man wearing that frown man now
It's trials from my brain step into my frame now
- One, two, three, four.
Don't bring me down man wearing that frown man now
It's trials from my brain step into my frame now
Don't bring me down man wearing that frown man now
It's trials from my brain step into my frame now
- This song is called "Together.
" Oh yeah, motherfucker! In time she'll see that her and me Were meant to be together
And time will pass and it may go fast But we'll still be together
And where I go She's at my side
Half of my life together
It's easy love Fits like a glove from up above
Together, together, together
It's just not fair because I've had my share of fucking bitches
For my girlfriend and me to be together
Because she really hasn't, you know, slept around that much
But if it's fine that I've done my time Her and me will walk the line together
And when she's low I'll always know
We'll always go together
It's easy love fits like a glove from up above together
Together, together Together, together
- Take it, Pete - Nice.
- Who's got a beer? - Here? - Sick! Bless you.

Artist Bio

Mac DeMarco is a Canadian musician born in Duncan, British Columbia. He was raised in Edmonton but moved to Vancouver after graduating high school. He is now based in Montreal. Formerly recording as Makeout Videotape, he has produced two solo albums, Rock and Roll Nightclub and 2. His style has been described as slacker rock. He is a multi-instrumentalist as well as a multimedia artist.

After DeMarco graduated from high school in Edmonton, Alberta in 2008, he moved to Vancouver, BC. Living in the Killarney neighbourhood, he released a self-produced album, Heat Wave, calling himself Makeout Videotape. The album sold out its 500-unit run. DeMarco worked on "psychedelic" video projects during this time. He was joined by Alex Calder and Jen Clement, signed to Unfamiliar Records, and toured with Vancouver band Japandroids in 2009.

In 2012, DeMarco moved to Montreal and began recording as a solo artist. Failing to find work as a musician, he participated in medical experiments for money and worked on a road paving crew. In early 2012, he released an EP titled Rock and Roll Nightclub. The four-track-recorded album features skits and slowed-down vocals. It impressed his new label, Captured Tracks, enough that they agreed to release a full-length album. This release, entitled 2, was received well by critics, garnering a Best New Music designation from Pitchfork Media. One of his songs was licensed by U.S. retail outlet Target for a commercial. In June 2013, the album was longlisted for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.
