Show Review

Nineteen-year-old British singer-songwriter Jake Bugg is a man of few words, that is until he begins his strumming. His unique voice is one that finds few, yet highly admirable comparisons - perhaps a rockabilly-folk twangy twist of The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle and Colin Meloy of the Decemberists. The release of his self-titled, full-length debut last October sent a sonic shockwave through the music world with songs like the feverishly hooking foot-pounder "Lightning Bolt" and the howling 60s rock sing-along "Two Fingers".

Jake took the stage late one evening at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel, where he roared through his catalog of catchy hits for an rock-hungry crowd. And we were there to catch the solid solo kid in action.

Hello, I'm Jake Bugg.
This song's called "Kentucky.
" music
I'm mean man from Kentucky
Have a guitar but have no money.
That don't mean that I'm blue
But listen kid, because I am telling you
Meet me at the railroad when I'm all alone
See me at the station when I'm on my own
When I'll go.
When I'll go
I'm mean man from Kentucky
Have a guitar but have no money.
That don't mean that I'm blue
But listen kid, because I am telling you
Meet me at the railroad when I'm all alone
See me at the station when I'm on my own
Get me out of here.
Get me out of here
Take a fast train, don't you disappear. Oh no, oh no
I'm mean man from Kentucky
Have a guitar but have no money.
That don't mean that I'm blue
But listen kid, because I am telling you
This song is about where I'm from.
music
Stuck in speed bump city
Where the only thing that's pretty is the thought of getting out
There's a tower block overhead.
All you've got's your benefits
And you're barely scraping by
In this trouble town troubles are found
In this trouble town words do get 'round
Kick the bottom make troubles flee.
Smoke until our eyes would bleed
A spark will pop the seed
Hear the sirens down the street.
The kids get light on their feet
Or they'll be in the back seat
In this trouble town troubles are found
You are sitting on the pavement.
Boy you've missed your payment
And they're gonna find you soon
If there's a beating in the rain.
If there's a little bit of pain, man
You're the one it happens to. Oh
When I talk of getting out I only hear the laughter loud
It's gotten ugly at home
Somewhere there's a secret road to take me far away I know
But 'til then I am hollow
In this trouble town troubles are found
In this trouble town words do get 'round
You are sitting on the pavement.
Boy you've missed your payment
And they're gonna find you soon
If there's a beating in the street.
If there's a feeling of defeat
You're the one it happens to. Oh
Stuck in speed bump city where the only thing that's pretty
Is the thought of getting out
Thank you.
This song's called "Two Fingers.
" I drink to remember, I smoke to forget.
Some things to be proud of, some stuff to regret
Gone down some dark alleys in my own head
But something is changing, changing, changing
I go back to Clifton to see my old friends
The best people I could ever have met.
Skin up a fat one, hide from the Feds
But something is changing, changing, changing
So I kiss goodbye to every little ounce of pain
Light a cigarette and wish the world.
I got out, I got out, I'm alive
And I'm here to stay
So I hold two fingers up to yesterday
Light a cigarette and wish the world away
I got out, I got out, I'm alive and I'm here to stay
Down in the kitchen, drinking white lightning
And he's with my momma, yelling and fighting
And it's not the first time praying for silence
But something is changing, changing, changing
So I kiss goodbye to every little ounce of pain
Light a cigarette and wish the world away
I got out, I got out, I'm alive and I'm here to stay
So I hold two fingers up to yesterday
Light a cigarette and smoke it all away
I got out, I got out, I'm alive and I'm here to stay
There's a story for every corner of this place
Running so hard you got out, but your knees got grazed
I'm an old dog but I've learned some new tricks, yeah
So I kiss goodbye to every little ounce of pain
Light a cigarette and wish the world away
I got out I got out I'm alive and I'm here to stay
So I hold two fingers up to yesterday.
Light a cigarette and smoke it all away
I got out I got out I'm alive and I'm here to stay
Hey, hey it's fine.
Hey, hey it's fine
Hey, hey it's fine, I left it behind
Cheers.
This song's called "Taste It.
" Fill my head with the future.
Fill my eyes with the sky
Whole of my life been left behind, but I've never felt more alive
High speed conversations.
Speeding on down the line
Looked in your eyes said the saddest goodbye
But I've never felt more alive
I can taste it in my mouth it's just so bitter sweet
It's right there in your eyes of apple green
It should be easy, but it's hard to leave
Went down in a fiery Zeppelin.
You won't know if you don't try
Nothing but my shirt and I walked away hurt
But I've never felt more alive
Talking on a bad connection.
Think I might have fused a wire
Your on the other side as I've always sussed out
but I've never felt more alive
I can taste it in my mouth it's just so bittersweet
It's right there in your eyes of apple green
It should be easy, but it's hard to leave
Yeah and this road between us
Man, it's been a long hard drive.
You pay for it in the morning when
Your best friend is denied
Flying all around, never looking down.
No, I've never felt more alive
Journeys going fast I hope it's gonna last because I've never felt more alive
Oh
I can taste it in my mouth it's just so bittersweet
It's right there in your eyes of apple green
It should be easy, but it's hard to leave
Thank you.
Thank you all for coming.
This is going to be my last song.
My name is Jake Bugg, by the way.
Spelled with two Gs.
Thank you.
This song's called "Lighting Bolt.
" Morning, it's another pure grey morning.
Don't know what the day is holding
When I get uptight and I walk right into the path of a lightning bolt
Siren of an ambulance comes howling.
Right through the center of town and
No one blinks an eye and I look up to the sky in the path of a lightning bolt
Met her as the angels parted for her, but it only brought me torture
But that's what happens when it's you that's standing
In the path of a lightning bolt
Everyone I see just wants to walk with gritted teeth
But I just stand by and I wait my time
They say you got to tow the line they want the water not the wine
But when I see the signs I jump on that lightning bolt
Chances, people tell you not to take chances
When they tell you there aren't any answers
And I was starting to agree But I awoke suddenly
In the path of a lightning bolt
Fortune, people talking all about fortune
Do you make it or does it just call you? In the blinking of an eye
Just another passerby in the path of a lightning bolt
Everyone I see just wants to walk with gritted teeth
But I just stand by and I wait my time
They say you got to tow the line they want the water not the wine
But when I see the signs I jump on that lightning bolt
Silence, I was lying back gazing skyward
When the moment got shattered.
I remembered what she said
And then she fled in the path of a lightning bolt
Thank you very much.
You have a good night.
My name's Jake Bugg.
