Show Review

Long before taking to the stage at Coachella, the boys from White Arrows were just a bunch of pre-teen groms sneaking into the festival under the guise of being famous. After releasing their debut LP Dry Land Is Not A Myth last summer, the band was finally invited this year to help open the festival two weekends in a row. The band is described under the super niche sub-genre of Psychotropical Pop, which provokes thoughts of magic mushrooms doused in pina coladas, but aptly describes their lax style and musical flavor. It's a lot like if Vampire Weekend got themselves Hawaiian shirts, and took a lot of LSD during a West Coast vacation - it's great. The band fit right in alongside the pool at our backyard oasis and brought the psych-trop tunes, as well as some interesting sunglasses. Enjoy this Festival Fever Session clip of the band's performance of "I Can Go".

I'm in the forest, I'm in the trees,
I swing down to your leaf, I see your smile, I see your face,
I drink it down for a taste, When I'm alone, in the woods,
I scream your name, it's no good, I can't explain this feeling I get,
No one seems to understand
I don't know what happens now, I cannot see the future now,
Look into those pretty eyes, I fall for it every time,
Something happens, something changes, Everyone cheats in this game,
Look into the sun again, And in the shade is Berlin
From now on, I found you,
Oh, it goes, Around you
I climbed a mountain, I'm at the peak,
I'm looking down at everything, Looks so small, you look like ants,
Crawling around in skinny pants, Hair down to your knees,
I'm begging baby, baby please, We can live here in the woods,
Forever now, I know we could
From now on, I found you,
Oh, it goes, Around you
Open up and I'll say more, Open up and I'll say more
Open and I will say more, Open and I will say more
Open up and I'll say more, Open up and I'll say more
Open and I will say more, Open and I will say more
Open up and I'll say more, Open up and I'll say more,
Hold me now, to say more, Hold me now, to say more
Open up and I'll say more, Open up and I'll say more,
Hold me now, to say more, Hold me now, to say more
Open up and I'll say more, Open up and I'll say more,
Hold me now, to say more, Hold me now, to say more
Open up and I'll say more, Open up and I'll say more
Hold me now, to say more, Hold me now, to say more
is "Dry Land Is Not A Myth".
I can't take credit for it, JP was the one that thought of the ideas, so, he said it and we had a couple of ideas for other names, and that was the one that we all liked, and it kinda suits us, and I think the group of songs that we've put on the record.
Yeah, it seems it's been our MO, but it's been completely unintentional.
"Coming or Going" is the first song I ever wrote, and completed.
And so everything else has just kind of been a journey of figuring out who we are and what kind of sounds we like.
And so the fact that it's so hard to describe is because we haven't really figured out what, exactly what we want yet.
Sand beneath your tongue,
Hold your body warm, Grip your pillow tight,
keeps you warm at night
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore,
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore,
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Grass between your toes, Gusty winds that blow,
Jellyfish in the sea, Like fireworks from beneath.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my woes, And I'm a whore.
Papa don't sell my soul, And I'm a whore
- I like it 'cause it forces you to kinda re-imagine how your songs are.
You know we played the second biggest stage at Coachella, which we're not used to playing stages that big, so it was really cool to hear our sounds through huge stacks of PA, and then coming here and playing next to a pool.
We've done everything but it's a good way to just hear the song and kinda reminds you what the lyrics and melody are.
Because you're so used to playing it one way, you kind of rediscover your own songs.
We're a California band so I pretty much grew up going to the festival.
When I was around 12 years old I would hitchhike with older kids from my school, and we didn't have tickets or anything, and we used to come in behind the Mojave tent, and that's where VIP parking used to be, and artist parking, and me and my friend in his blue Jetta drove up and said that we were playing the festival, and they kind of gave us a hard time for a second, then didn't realize that they had no idea who anyone was that was playing the festival so we very well could have been, even though we looked like 12 and 16 year olds, respectively, and were in a car that could not carry any gear whatsoever.
But we did get in.
You never know what happened before,
I saw your name and I couldn't be sure, Yeah you know it'll happen again,
Sitting down with a horse and a mane
Dancing at your home, You got no money and you're all alone,
Know that here we go again, It happened once, it'll happen again.
Leave me alone when you call my house, Leave me alone when you call my house,
Saying I can go, I can go.
Leave me alone when you call my house, Leave me alone when you call my house,
Saying I can go, I can go.
Fool me once, you feel me again, Hearing stories about my friends,
I'm away and I'll never come home, I'm in a desert all alone.
Walking off into the night, I took 'shrooms before my flight,
Freaking out and got all scared, Like insects were in there.
Leave me alone when you call my house, Leave me alone when you call my house,
Saying I can go, I can go.
Leave me alone when you call my house, Leave me alone when you call my house,
Saying I can go, I can go.
And when the lines start misbehaving,
I'll pretend like I have seen them all along
Because when I can't trust the colors
Before one turns into another and reborn
Leave me alone when you call my house, Leave me alone when you call my house
Saying I can go, I can go
Leave me alone when you call my house, Leave me alone when you call my house
Saying I can go, I can go
