Show Review

Here We Go Magic are lying low. Our super-secret, insiderish sources say the Brooklyn band are hunkered down somewhere in Upstate New York, recording a follow-up to A Different Ship. Released in 2012, the band recruited Nigel "F'n" Godrich to lend a hand in the album's production, resulting in a brilliant breakthrough of hypnotizing, oft-kilter indie happenings. That album featured highlights like "Make Up Your Mind" and "How Do I Know"; two songs awash in wily keyboard lines, playful guitar licks, vocal staccato, and general urban funkiness. When it was released, the album marked Luke Temple and his bandmates as the closest thing to the Talking Heads going. Thank god for that.

Last month we managed to persuade the band to take a break from crafting their new studio spells to perch along The East River as part of New York Road Runner's Brooklyn Half Pre-Party. While the band dusted off euphoric versions of both of the aforementioned jams above, the real treat was the mysterious overture that preceded the more familiar material. A sprawling, 10 minute creation that slowly bloomed to life, the band offered a sneak peak of what's to come...the first taste of new Here We Go Magic that we know of. We couldn't have been more thrilled to host it on our stage on that foggy evening back in May and now, for the first time, we're giving you a chance to hear a snippet of the future. Like their 2012 album, it seems this magnificent band of musical visionaries our once again outfitting a different musical ship.

About New York Road Runners' Brooklyn Half Pre Party
For three days leading up to the New York Road Runners' Brooklyn Half on May 17,
runners and their supporters gathered at the brand-new Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge
Park to pick up race materials, get psyched, and had a good time at the Brooklyn
Half Pre-Party presented by New Balance.

There was plenty of energy, including music curated by Baeblemusic, DJ's, and
fitness classes run by New York Health and Racquet Club. Runners got their
participant T-shirts and bibs and enjoyed authentic Brooklyn food, drinks, and
entertainment.

Just another maniac, baby
Stuck inside where the flicker goes out
All alone, lives in a hideout, Livin' for rent 100%
Walk to the corner where the candy is cheap
Don't take my candy ' is a promise to keep
Hides his secret, secret lipstick
Living for rent 100%
All alone, touchin' himself livin' for rent 100%
There's somethin' underneath my bed
Oh, there's Fridays in the dead man's pose
Oh, he sleeps, facing sheets livin' for rent 100%
And if ya see a light at night
It's only sounds and he's pickin' his fights
He ain't gonna change
Livin' for rent 100%
Don'tcha shortchange
He's livin' for rent 100%
First guess, best guess, unless, actress
Little bit a light, that's alright
Do it anyway, no better time comin'
Ain't got no trust, too much fussin'
Red line slow, don't like bussin'
Let me see, gimme a minute
Need to look it over, put my bird brain in it
What if it's bad Way too hot
What if I get what the fat man's got
Gotta be smart, take your cues
Sniff that air, read that news
Make up your mind
Make up your mind
Make up your mind
What if it's filled with poison air
What if we step and the ground ain't there
Ain't no sucker, been here before
Face smashed in, swingin' door
If I've learned something with age
Golden bar, golden cage
Don't push, my space human race replace
Don't push, my space, human race replace
Don't push, my space, human race replace
Don't push, my space, human race replace
Make up your mind
Make up your mind
Make up your mind
Make up your mind
Make up your mind
How do I know if I love you
When I sure love your bread
The way that you tucker, and straight your bed
How do I know if I love you
How do I know if I know you
When you come out clean from the shower
You squeak to the touch and you smell like a flower
How do I know if I know you
Some men die, in a fall
Not trusting their nose to show them the way
Some men die, in a fall
The sun ain't no keeper in the pit of that day
How do I know if I love you
When all these things come and go
You can't stand them together in some neat little row
So how do I know, how do I know
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo, hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo, a-hoo, hoo
Ooh, ooh, ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo.
Hoo-huh-hoo-hoo-huh-hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo Hoo-a-hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo
How do I know, if I love you
When that light in your house isn't on
I thought I heard movement but maybe I'm wrong
So how do I know, if I know you
How do I know if I love you
When you've drawn that imaginary line
That way that you walk in two steps behind
How do I know, if you're mine
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo, hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo a-hoo, hoo
Ooh, ooh, ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo.
Hoo-huh-hoo-hoo-huh-hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo Hoo-a-hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo
How do I know, how do I know, how do I know, how do I know
How do I know, how do I know, how do I know, how do I know
How do I know, how do I know, how do I know, how do I know
How do I know, how do I know, how do I know, how do I know
How do I know, how do I know how do I know, how do I know
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo, hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo, a-hoo, hoo
Ooh, ooh, ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo.
Hoo-huh-hoo-hoo-huh-hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo.
Hoo-a-hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo
Woo-hoo, ooh-hoo, woo-a-hoo, hoo, woo-hoo
- Thank you very much.

Artist Bio

We like the way the name sounds so we set it to music. Our own Luke made a beautiful record and we joined him to make something together. We are creating songs from melodies that can turn from gorgeous to challenging to a little scary and back again. Sounds are driven and shaped by, but hopefully never grounded by, rhythms that entrance before performing a somersault. It all seems silly on paper, but there are no dirty words: groovy, psychedelic, pretty etc... are all fair game. It is our hope that we generate something generous and surprising, crafted but instinctive, even as it coalesces. So far it is a lovely ruckus.
