Show Review

Though usually a wild and rambunctious outfit in the live setting, Klaxons prove their capable of intense adaptability in our latest segment of The Guest Apartment. Trading the percussive heartbeat, piercing guitar work, and lofty atmospheric flourishes their used to rolling over audiences with for lush acoustics, vocal harmonies, and the band's wiley falsettos, the band serve notice that their intergalactic psych rock can make unexpected turns towards other distant sonic galaxies. What follows is an effortless acoustic session that showcases the roots of their often very weird compositions in an endearing and intimate manner. Cut with candid conversation about their work, our latest segment of The Guest Apartment showcases a familiar band of stars in an elegant new way. You can bet Space Cat is proud of his boys. - David Pitz

- We're very good at giving advice we very seldom follow.
wood between the worlds]
boundaries start to swirl]
- I think it's just pretty weird.
It just a bit difficult to pinpoint.
Our music comes out of some weird part of our brains and it's difficult to pinpoint.
I don't know.
Just don't know if we're a bit odd.

- I feel like this record is more of an expression of our personalities than the first record.
Our first record was more of a kind of art project.
I think with this record it's more of a kind of expression of each of our personalities and it was unexpected and it's just something we're quite thankful for and it's worked out.
I think that's the main difference from where we were and where we're at today.
- Surfing the void.
- I think that title was kind of self referential and it's a bit cheeky and it just kind of states that we're in a really good place, I think, and we're not held down by any form of negativity.
I think that's pretty much it.
But other than that it's obvious.
The image is great.
The image is going around quite well.
I think the kind of, nonchalant space scene not care about anything summed up the record.
It made a lot of sense.
There was a lot going on but the cat's not going to tell you anything about it.
diamond dust]
The sun dogs guide the way towards the]
valley of calm trees]
Amongst the ice fog]
Our means of travel]
Let us imagine]
Are swaying in time]
Down in the valley the flowers]
No sign of passing time]
Are tumbling down]
Visions are clear as we notice]
The three suns align.
Upon arrival, the dust and deserts drone]
Could keep us from all time]
In visionary worlds]
Down in the valley the calm trees]
We can't avert our eyes]
Are food for the mind]
Over the hills where the mountains]
A place of natural wonder]
The three suns align]
we feel the breeze]
there is to be seen]
moments away from the dream]
- I think there's this weird thing where if people win the Mercury prize the record they make afterwards is normally denser and heavier and darker.
And for whatever reason, like we fell into that doing that as well.
It's probably a subconscious thing...it's a conscious thing but we were just very grateful for that.
That was a wonderful part and the last couple of years for us.
We've been working constantly since on our record since don't even think we took a personal holiday.
I don't think we did - Would you guys know what to do with yourselves if you did? - I don't know.
I was thinking about working with acoustics or... - Twiddle your thumbs.
- I'm not really good at doing nothing, really.
- Rubbish at doing nothing.
Visible love stands side by side]
Beginnings never end]
We take our fears and disappear somehow]
Beginnings never end]
As we turn towards our very start]
When we move emotions multiply]
As we move you can't tell us apart]
When we move together]
Conducted love, brought us a light]
Beginnings never end]
We take our fears and disappear somehow]
Beginnings never end]
As we turn towards our very start]
as we move emotions multiply]
As we move you can't tell us apart]
When we move together]
Instants synchronize]
We harmonize in time]
Twin flames in our minds]
As we move towards our very start]
when we move emotions multiply]
As we move you can't tell us apart]
When we move together]
Instants synchronize]
We harmonize in time]
Instants synchronize]
We harmonize in time]
- There's a cliche, like if it's a proper song you can play acoustic.
Someone said that.
- Yeah.
We actually really enjoy it.
It's just really nice to work out all the parts slightly differently.
- Plus to hear them working it's... - It's new territory for us.
- It's a new thing but it's working and we feel comfortable.
It's nice afternoon thing for us.
- We'll be kind of matching ourselves in different scenarios as if the band might have formed this way.
- It's just funny because it doesn't make any sense to us.
It's quite nice that it happened though.

- We've always thought that we made celebratory music, you know, for people to just really have a good time to.
The idea is kind of leave yourself at the door and come in and soak it all up and don't worry about anything else that's going on outside the door while you're watching it.
Yeah, I guess that's kind of what's going on every night.
the trails lead to]

- Hey, we're the Klaxons and you're watching Baeble Music.

Artist Bio

The London-based Klaxons feature the combined talents of Jamie Reynolds, James Righton, and Simon Taylor. Despite being a rock band at the core, Klaxons are heavily influenced by dance music, particularly the late-'80s/early-'90s U.K. rave movement. (Reynolds has even dubbed his band "nu-rave" to further emphasize the inspiration.) By the time Klaxons released their second low-key single, they had become a favorite of publications such as NME and wound up signing with Polydor Records. As the group set to work on its first album, the Modular label issued a brief singles compilation entitled Xan Valleys in late 2006. Myths of the Near Future, the full-length debut, was then released in early 2007 on both sides of the Atlantic. That same year, Myths of the Near Future won the coveted Mercury Prize. In 2008, Klaxons began work recording new songs with legendary producer Tony Visconti and later with Bernard "Focus..." Edwards, Jr. Purportedly, the band's label Polydor felt the songs were too experimental and rejected the album. Subsequently, Klaxons did re-record the album with producer Ross Robinson. In 2010, Klaxons released the material as its sophomore effort Surfing the Void.
